Is it bearable?
Are there any good boarding schools in the south?

It really varies a great deal. I suggest you go to weather.com and enter the city and state of a school from each area you are considering in the search box at the top. Go to “monthly”. At the bottom of the graphic click “averages” and you will get the average temps for each month on one nifty graph. Like this one for Deerfield MA: [Average Weather for Deerfield, MA - Temperature and Precipitation](<a href=“Ashburn, VA Monthly Weather Forecast - weather.com”>Ashburn, VA Monthly Weather Forecast - weather.com)

If you notice, there’s even a drop down menu at the top that will let you compare locations.

Happy info-gathering! :)

The cold in any of these places can be brutal if you’re not properly dressed. If, however, you’ve learned to wear the rather unfashionable but very toasty clothing to which locals are accustomed the cold is not a problem. With a good hat, jacket, boots and gloves you can be quite comfortable in the snow.

You could probably ask the same about the heat in the south. I would guess that southerners have developed means of dealing with heat of which we in the colder climates are not aware.

If you’re relocating to a cold area I’d wait to buy cold weather gear until you arrive. Local stores can give you good advice as to what you need. I still remember when my SIL from San Diego insisted that she had good cold weather gear. After 10 outside she was shivering. All her clothing was lined with cotton, whereas ours was made of materials such as polarfleece. We could have spent hours out in the weather.

but whats it like playing football?
you cant just put on extra layers

In the Boston area, does it snow a lot (>6 in) a few times a year or a little (<6 in) many times? Is the plowing prompt after a snowfall? Do you have a lot of icy/slushy days? For commuters, is an AWD car recommended or you can get by with a FWD?

There are some great boarding schools in the warmer climate zones of the US, namely Cate school, Thacher, The Webb schools and several others which I may not know of.

The schools noted in assign’s post are all well recognized schools in amazing areas, especially the 1st 2. Cate is a couple miles from some of the best So. Cal. beaches just south of Santa Barbara in a really neat little beach town. Weather is probably the most mild you will find- we camp and surf around there in December. Thatcher is in an artsy-craftsy little town a bit inland just a little to the south of Cate-also fairly close to great beaches- again great weather but hotter in the summer. Webb is a beautiful campus up in a canyon in Los Angeles County. Still fairly nice in winter, but much hotter in summer (up in the 100’s -115 degrees in summer.) All 3 schools have an amazing list of graduates. Check them out.

In MA in particular on average we get >6 in a year. This year was odd and we barely got any until like Feb. NY is different and so is NH, I can’t really speak for them but I’ve heard horror stories.

In MA, do you get a few heavy snow falls or many light snow falls each winter?

Pulsar - the answer is …yes… It can be either. Or both. And it varies depending where you are in MA too.
