How competitive is TCNJ? Will I get in?

Hey, I thought this would be a match school for me, but the more i hear about it, the more i doubt this. I have a 4.0, good EC's, top 5% of class, 1120 SAT, awesome recs... Someone was saying you had to have a 1200 to get in, i doubt this tho. Thanks 4 ur help.

I live in South Jersey and I have to say that TCNJ has gotten extremely competitive. Ever since it changed its name from Trenton State to TCNJ, the school for some reason got more appeal and stronger applicants have been getting in every year. I am not trying to discourage you, you have decent scores and your GPA would definitely pull you, but from what I have heard and seen (I know about a dozen and a half kids applying to TCNJ at my schools as either safeties (they have like 1400s) or matchs (they have like 1300s-1400s) the school isn't the "safety instate college" it used to be in the past. Everyone I know that applied seem to consider it a good instate college that they would attend if the do not get accepted to their first choice. Honestly, your SATs may hurt you a little and you should try and bring them up on a re-test but your GPA and recs (if they are good like you say) could definitely stand as a strong pt. in your application. Sorry if this seems a little discouraging, but TCNJ is becoming more selective because of its academic quality and location close to home for many in staters. Lately people have been saying its better than Rutgers because it is smaller, different atmosphere, etc. But that is just what I have heard...Good Luck

Your SAT is a bit low for TCNJ; average about 1230 ish I think.
But the rest of your stats look great! Best of luck.
TCNJ is a solid choice: good academics, gorgeous campus, reasonable tuition.
ALOT of very accomplished NJ students use it as their safety and some don't seem to mind actually attending either!

Thanks for your help! Yea my g.c. said it was a reach, but he also said that if i didn't get in he'd be mad- cuz he knows people that got in that were less smart than me. I hate how schools base everything off the SAT! Its not enough that we study for 4 years, but we also have to study for a test nothing like hs tests :(. I'm still applying here, hopefully I'll make the cut!

hey i applied to tcnj too, did u hear from them yet?

Um if you have an 1100 SAT...you can't be that smart, no offense. Some people post 1200s and 1300s who are capable of 1400 or 1500, but if you're at an 1100, there's a reason...

And what, O Master Genius, is the magical cutoff for being able to be "smart"?

hey biler, anyone is capable of raising their SAT scores 100-200 points ive done it myself starting with a lot lower than a 12 or 1300. i saw another post by her and im pretty sure she raised her SAT to a 1240. you obviously dont know that the SAT does not test how smart you are. there is such a thing as bad test takers and people who just generally are not good at taking the SATs. this girl probably got better grades than u did in high school so please refrain from the haughty comments because you are really insulting your own intelligence with comments like those.

Tell that to Ralph Nader and Sen. Bill Bradley.

michelec, what kind of courseload have you taken? If you've taken AP's that would help.

Just in case, you might want to consider Rowan. Same feel as TCNJ and good location but not as hard to get into, but getting more selective.

Um what's her gpa? and number of AP classes?

biler, with a comment like that you know you are gonna get harsh feedback. I completely agree with Ash. The SAT does not under any circumstances test how smart you are- there is more to life and more to someone's ability than a 3 hour test and obviously you don't understand that. Besides, an 1120 is around 100 pts. above the national average- it may not be "good" to you but it is considered above average.

As for your chances, your grades will help you in getting in. Also, if you have excellent recs as you say you do then I'd say you're in.

I live in North Jersey and watch the Jets religiously. I just got into TCNJ and know that it is almost directly in the middle of New York and Philadelphia. Does anybody know if it carries the Philly or New York TV and Radio stations? Thanks a lot.

Hey thanks for the encouragment about sat scores. I really didn't appreciate that comment biler333. Btw, I have a 4.0 w GPA with all honors and AP classes, I have 2 this year and had 1 last year. I'm ranked 5th in my class, top 5%. I haven't heard back from TCNJ yet, I got into Rowan though where I also applied. I too believe a 3hr test isnt as indicitive of your ability to excel in college than 4 years of advanced classes. Thanks 4 the responses!
