is there a good bball or sports following at penn. the reason im asking is b/c last thurs i went to the gtown wvu game with my bro in the student section, and for a relatively unimportant game (wvu unranked, not like a gtown cuse game or anything tho we did lose:() i must say it was a really fun experience, lots of school spirit it was really crazy.

also what sports are considered important at penn (eg. cornell=hockey) i mean i like sports a lot and dont want to spend my whole college social life drinking at frat parties/bars b/c thats only fun once in a while

Easy answers first: Basketball, and then football. Occasionally another sport if they're nationally ranked/ winning a championship. No hockey, which is a shame given its prominence elsewhere in the league.

Penn's not a sport school. You won't find real tailgating, you won't find lots of school spirit, and it waivers year to year. Basketball can however be a lot of fun, given the princeton rivalry and Philadelphia Big 5 basketball. This year, the team stinks and attendance is down. When penn went to the tourney it was a lot more fun. If you ever go to a game this year, you'll see me under the basket in the front row, but I don't know how many other students will be there with me. Saturday night's game against St. Joe's sold out the palestra, and provided an excellent show.

I guess Penn athletics is a great source of fun for me (and many of my friends) but we acknowledge its diminishing appeal in an environment obsessed with grade whores, job hunters, and alcoholics. Most people at Penn are either too tool or too cool to be interested in the sports teams. Sigh...

Penn definitely has school spirit and good teams to go with it. In most years, their BB and FB teams are challenging for Ivy Championships and the crowds are pretty good. That can't be said for most other Ivy schools.
