So here's the deal. I'm kind of average in most areas:

2150 SAT
3.9 GPA
Jr year APs, Calc BC(5), USH(5), Lit(5) (+ other honors classes)
Sr year APs, Latin, Lang, Bio (+ other honors classes and an independent study)

I'm active in the music area, having studied several instruments for many years, and volunteer at hospitals, do orchestra, have a band, and do the music for musicals. I do a lot of tutoring, and I started an active GSA. I'll be running national security simulations for the APUSH classes next year. The highlights are pretty much lots of music dedication and lots of volunteering.

Nothing massively impressive, but I'm not a bad student. However, I completely bombed my SAT IIs. I didn't study for them, it was right after an incredibly stressful few months of school and I was running on empty. 710 USH and 600 in Latin, because I knew NONE of the Latin vocab. I took 3 practice tests and was scoring 750+ each time, but because I knew the vocab.

I'm going to retake SATs in fall. Unfortunately, Latin is only offered in June and December. My top choice is Georgetown EA, and they don't do score choice. Is it better to take 2-3 other tests in October/November? Or should I sign up for the December ones, also taking Latin? If you still have test scores coming, G-town reviews your application without your SAT IIs and accepts/defers you based on that. Should I do that instead?

My other schools are GW, AU, U of O, and U of P. Is that 600 really damaging? I'm good at Latin (one of my recs will be from my Latin teacher) so I really want to retake it.

@eljamas – the 710 isn’t bombing. The 600 is. Also, 3.9 GPA and 2150 SAT are actually BELOW average. The average for G-town is a bit higher than that.

Its not going to help you at all, but one SAT 2 (especially latin) is going to be miniscule on your full app, even tho youre reaching a bit for georgetown. I would go with your second option listed, and not worry about it too much

@schmohawk: “Is it better to take 2-3 other tests in October/November? Or should I sign up for the December ones, also taking Latin?” My question is about taking the remaining SAT IIs in Oct/Nov, or waiting until December to retake Latin.

@collegeboy1234: Okay, thanks for the input. I guess my main worry is this: the Latin class at my school is really hard, but I managed to pull through with an A- first semester and an A second semester. My Latin teacher’s recommendation will probably be the better of the two. Would a 600 on the Latin SAT II make that less valuable? Anyway I will take your advice and do the second option.

Im sure Gtown will look at your Latin achievement holistically, meaning that you must realize they arent going to put all the weight into an SAT2 test on one day vs two semesters of A-/A work. It seems like you just had a bad test day, and with a better score highly possible you shouldnt have to worry

The fact that your stats are “BELOW” average is a little dramatic. Your SAT score is approximately 10 pts below average (one whole question…woooo). And your GPA is in the top 20% of admitted students. I’d even say your a match for Georgetown. Anyone who disagrees is comparing you to ridiculous CC’s who make up about 2% of the general population.

Note: My cousin is at Georgetown studying language (and she got a 590 on her language SAT II).

If I’m assuming U of P is Upenn correctly, you should retake latin to have a realistic shot of getting in, since your stats are below average (upenn is an ivy league remember). For Georgetown though, two great SAT II scores could overshadow your Latin score (I’d recommend not putting Latin down as a major though). Best of luck!
