How did you get the job you applied for?

How did you get the job you applied for? Do you plan on working there for the summer?

What should I put on my resume if I want to apply for a summer part time job in retails/sales?

I'm 17, but some of the jobs at the mall state that I have to be 18. Also I live in Michigan, where the unemployment is iffy. Where else can people apply for a job?

What employers are looking for when hiring teenagers is cheap, punctual labor. Past job experience is a plus. Experience in that particular field a major plus.

It would help your cause if you’ve had sales experience, working for other retailers for example. Otherwise, you’re starting from square one and can’t do anything about it. Everyone’s got to start somewhere.

Honestly, I got my job at a tutor center through connections. My older sister used to work there but was going away to college and she recommended hiring me. If you have any friends that have jobs, ask them to find out if their employer needs extra help. I’m not working there over the summer. Too few hours, only around ten a week. It’s good for the school year but not for the summer. I need to work to save for college (especially the whole Student Contribution aspect).

Never had a resume so couldn’t help you there.

Do places like Michigan have some sort of summer youth employment program like NYC? They usually match you up w/ employers. If you can’t find a job in retails, you can always do typical teen summer jobs like camp counselor, lifeguard, etc.

No. Lol.

Starstruck, where do you live (roughly)? There are some leagues in Wayne County that are hiring umpires :).

I live in Metro Detroit (not Wayne County). I live where all the rich people live, if you know where.

Most grocery stores will hire 16 year olds for baggers or stockers. Also farm work or lawn care and yes, reffing any kind of sport you can do (and is much needed!).

Star, I’m going to send you a PM with some options :).

Have had 2 jobs; one was a summer job (transcript needed) and the other was during the school year only.

As others have said, previous experience and good grades and such definitely help.

Freelance :D

“I live in Metro Detroit (not Wayne County). I live where all the rich people live, if you know where.”

Oakland County or Ann Arbor?

Don’t expect a job as a salesman. Especially with no experience, and an even stronger especially for part-time work (you’re basically not going to get a job as a commissioned sales person if that what you were hoping for… sorry). However many retail stores will have people who are something like a salesperson’s assistant. You’ll get some sales experience, and it’s a lot better than fast food or Target. Find out what those jobs are, where they are, and apply. Just go to shopping areas, go into retail stores, and ask someone there.

Whoa- I totally read that as (in Wayne County) not (not Wayne County).

You’re gonna get a job in a minimum wage seasonal job.

I applied at a national bank (trading room {International securities/equities&FX},middle east), they laughed hysterically. Well, the sales leader was interested in why I applied, asked me to join the floor for a week and see how well I can do…and voila! got it. pays handsomely too, $1500 (part-time obviously), in addition to 1% commission of whatever I make up to 1 mil (local currency, approx. 700k usd).

past experience: floor assistant at a major bank, shuffling papers, basic stuff, got to trade for the last 5 weeks at the old place. loved it.

I work as an ump for travel baseball games that I can personally schedule around my baseball games. $44 for 2 hours of work so not bad and I usually can double or triple up my games. I started at 15 just and got the job simply because I met the guy who runs this big ump business in my metro area and asked him if I could do it. He said yes.

I applied, got an interview, and was offered the job. No cool story.

And I regret it every damn day of my life.
