Jobs

For those of you who have one, how did you get your job? I'm looking into my first job. Do you have any tips?

If anyone does, please tell me. I’ll still looking for a job here and no one is hiring. Actually, one place was, but because of my own stupidity I missed the application deadline.

:(

^at the place where I used to live, you can just go up to the main shopping center and ask around, and usually there’ll be several stores hiring high schoolers for entry level positions.

I’m currently working a summer job which I found through idealist.org, but there are tons of search engines you can use.

^well, thank for website, but there’s no job on there for high school level education in the entire state, and only five listed for BA/BS (which I don’t even have) and they’re all beyond reasonable travel distance.

Edit: any other suggestions?

CONNECTIONS!

do you know someone working? someone who knows someone who knows someone working? have you looked into any of the past place that you volunteered at to see if they liked your work and are hiring? have you tried low paying community areas like the goodwill/boy&girls clubs/parks/YMCA/other recreation areas? even if the pay is low and the work is annoying these places have a lot of connections with stores and restaurants and businesses in cities and their referrals mean a lot. go buy the downtown and malls and just ask around, walk into places asking if they’re hiring and if they are don’t leave without setting an interview.

The only job I “got” (I was selected for the other one), I filled out the application. Wrote the essays, got the recs. And then we had two interviews, one of which was a mock trial. It was sort of like applying to college, I guess.

I actually don’t know anyone in this entire area, so that doesn’t help… I did work for the person I used to volunteer for though, but then I had to quit when I moved

“go buy the downtown and malls and just ask around, walk into places asking if they’re hiring and if they are don’t leave without setting an interview.”

^I tried that but only Khols said it was hiring. I was told to fill out an application and that someone will call me to set up an interview— no one called.

“have you tried low paying community areas like the goodwill/boy&girls clubs/parks/YMCA/other recreation areas? even if the pay is low and the work is annoying…”

LOL, I will be more than happy for a job at any of these places right now. I’ll try some of these places though. Thanks for the suggestions.

^Nah, those places are cool. My first job was at a community center working for minimum wage with a limit of 6 hours a week (during school) and the rest of the time there was considered voluntary. But the center also had a work help center and they helped me with a resume and sent it out along with their referrals to any place I wanted. But the work was outside all the time watching and running after kids. Still, I stayed with it and I really love the place and I worked there off and on all throughout high school (along with whatever other jobs I got), they ended up having a program to help with college applications and colleges liked the idea of me “mentoring” children.

^nice. I’ll go check whether there’s a community center in the area. I don’t think there’s an actual “park” here though, but I know there’re two goodwills (but I seriously doubt that they’ll want to hire anyone though:/)
