Can you take an AP exam for placement?

never mind...

"While the SAT Subject Test, Math 2 is typically used to determine your math course placement, the following exam scores and courses can alternatively be used to determine your placement and college course credit:

AP Calculus AB exam - if you scored a 3 or higher, you will receive credit for Math 31 and be placed into Math 32.
AP Calculus BC exam - if you scored a 3 or higher, you will get credit for both Math 31 and 32 and be placed into Math 33.
AP Calculus AB or BC exam - if you scored a 2, you will not get credit for a calculus course, but you will be exempted from Math 10.
IB (HL) Math exam - if you scored a 5 or higher, you will get credit for both Math 31 and 32 and be placed into Math 33.
SAT Subject Test, Math 1 – this exam may be taken instead of the SAT Subject Test, Math 2 if you do not want to take Math 31 as your first course at Carolina.
AP Statistics exam – if you scored a 3 or higher, you will get credit for Statistics 11 and will be exempted from Math 10.
College course – if you completed a math course at an accredited college with a C or better, be sure to send your official college transcript to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as soon as the transcript is available so that it can be evaluated for credit before orientation"

Has anyone deferred called UNC about their decision yet? I know Dean J from UVa says they encourage calls from students who are deferred wanting to know what they should do to have a better shot RD. Anyone done/doing this, or heard of someone in the past? Do they even allow/welcome this, I wonder?

I wasn't deferred, I'm just wondering.

so I'm allowed to send in extra essays? I'm wondering about the call too.

Is it really doom and gloom if one is deferred? I've read that top schools actually treat their deferred students quite well--a fairly high percentage of the deferred students actually get in. That's contradictory to the earlier post from chillmandan, a current UNC frosh, who only knows of one deferred app to get in. Any other thoughts/anecdotal information??

i sent an email: (this was my rough draft and my english teacher changed some words but i'm wondering if this was a bad idea or not)

Dear Carolina Admissions Staff,

I recently received a "defer" decision for Early Notification. Although I realize that the Admissions Office must be very busy at this time, I write to ask if there is anything that I can do to gain a better shot at Regular Notification. I am actually registered to take the SAT on January 27 since the deferral letter states that I have until February 12 to submit any additional SAT reports. My question is will these new, January 27 scores reflect in my application for consideration by the Admissions Office?

I am aware that the Admissions Office does not request that any additional supporting documents be sent, however, I write formally to ask if there is anything I can do to reflect my overwhelming desire to become a Tar-Heel.

Thank you for the consideration and warm Season's Greetings email.

Let us know how that goes! Good luck.

Bravo on the email! Very good idea.

I just really wish there was something else i could do... some way to increase my chances; oh well - another long wait process

Dear Joshua:

Thank you for your email. Since the SAT I scores will be released too late for
reconsideration of your admission decision, we do not advise that you resubmit
new SAT I scores. The only additional information that we need is your midyear
grades. The admissions committee will use these additional grades and the
information you provided with your application to make a final decision.

We understand that it's tough waiting for a decision. Please be sure to submit
your midyear grades and continue to work hard. We really do not require any
additional information.

Sincerely,

Pride_Surfer, I'm sorry about that. Best of luck though.

You'd think Carolina would be a little more open to extra info

Would it actually work against you if you or your GC sent in additional information? If you sent in an additional recommendation, would they hold it against you? Seems to me, it could only work in your favor and no chance that they'd hold it against you. Can't hurt, right? Anybody have experience? I could be wrong, but it's hard for me to believe such a move could have a negative effect on the process.

I don't think it will hurt.

My best friend got deferred, so she called and asked what she could do to "improve" next semester. She is considering retaking the SAT for the third time (her critical reading score was pretty low), and the admissions person said that would be fine. They worked something out since her scores are supposed to arrive after the regular decision deadline... I guess it depends on who you talk to. Still, it can't hurt to call or e-mail. Some form of correspondence will, if nothing else, set you apart from the other regular decision applicants. Good luck, everybody!

so who do i ask to talk to when i call admissions??? what EXACTLY should i say? i already signed up for the SAT (paid like $70 total w/ the late fee) just for the purpose of UNC.

I just don't know what to do anymore. i don't understand why admissions told me NOT to retake the test in email.

does anybody know what i should do/say to them? - a little desperate here

ummm....you should probably jus send your grades and send any other info and just wait.....i was deferred to and it sucks

Pride_Surfer, let me know you got my message: )

pride_surfer, how did u get deferred?

my friend got into unc with 1690 SAT and 4.2 GPA. good ecs. okay essays. in-state.

just wondering since i'll be applying rd.

I got in after being deferred and then waitlisted. I know 2 other people who got in the same way...
