Deferral Acceptance Rates?

I know that this issue was already discussed when decisions were sent out in January, but I never read a post that gave me a very good idea of what the acceptance rate for deferred students actually is. Does anybody have an idea? BTW, I am out of state.

On a tour last year, the lady told visitors that most out of state people would be deffered until April because of the strict OOS-IS ration. I don't know what the acceptance rate might be, but I would guess that it's better because you're OOS.

.....better? dont you mean worse?

OOS= even more difficult in reg decision round, and i heard deferrals usually mean rejection when it comes to carolina, but its just a rumor

"i heard deferrals usually mean rejection" -misstinax3

Great. I wish they would have just flat-out rejected me then. Why do they even give out deferrals? So much for that faint glimmer of hope.

April, don't know if this will make you feel any better, but I know of two kids last year that were deferred in EA and accepted later during RD

April - missxtina even said it was a rumor, and you're going to lose all hope because of a RUMOR?

mkm56, what were the stats of the people that you know that got in after being deferred? (SAT, GPA, classes, etc.)

got in:

1920, 4.4, 6 APs, officer in a lot of clubs, legacy.

i also know two other people

I don't know their specific stats as I didn't know their parents that well. I do know that both were top 10% of class--but not in top 3 of the class. Both were varsity athletes, one was male and one was female. Both took AP classes, but sorry I have no idea if they took THE hardest schedule possible.

were they IS?

yes, it is true that misstina said it was only a rumor, but it's a "rumor" I've heard a few times before. The more i think about my deferral, the worse I feel. It's unrealistic at this point for me to think I still have a legitimate shot. Thanks to all of you who listed past deferral to acceptance stories, but I think that those acceptances were rare, and often involved circumstances that do not apply to me (ie: recruited athlete, in state (I'm out of State))

my sat went up like 200 points total (110 cr + m) since i originally applied, my midyr grades are all A's except for one B in AP Enlish (B) and i put in an extra 30 community service hours so I hope they see that as growth.

I live in pender county (very underepresented) and the highest SAT anyone has had from my school is 1240 (he goes to UNC) and i got a 1260 so i really hope they find favor in me. My friend got into UNC w/ an 1150 last year.

best of luck to all

i think if you have a lot of growth it is easier to help yourself in the pool of deferred applicants

i got deferred too... i'm OOS (virginia) at public school with a 2150 SAT (1460). My GPA was a 3.94 and I've taken 8 APs. I was really hopeful that being deferred was a good thing, but I'm slowly losing hope. I'd already taken the SATs three times so I didn't really want to take them again, and my semester grades weren't as great as I'd planned:
AP Comparative Gov B+
AP Literature B+
Spanish 5 B+
AP BC Calc A
Advanced Band A
AP Chemistry B+
Senior Science Invest B+

Realistically, what kind of chances do I have...?

They were IS

well april1 is OOS, so those IS situations probably wont help ease her stress lol

Yea I was deferred in state. These are my stats

GPA: 3.8 UW, 4.7 Weighted
SAT: 1260
Class Rank: 10/485
14 AP classes
Minnesota State Debate tournament semifinalist
17 extracurriculars
Won 11 debate tournaments
Over 150 hours of community service
District tennis quarterfinalist
Captain of debate, and tennis team
Last Semester Grades:

AP Environmental Science: B(91.6)
AP Physics: B(87.4)
AP Government and politics: A(93.1)
AP economics: B(90.5)
AP Literature and Composition: B(86.8)
AP Computer Science:A(93.6)
Honors Civics and Econ: A(99.7)

fobby1818: I still cannot believe u did not get in in-state.

How were ur essays? Did u have more Ec's than these?

Damn...that kinda worries me if Fobby got deferred in-state.

well I was suprised that I did not get in, but I think it was because I had 2 c's last year, but hopefully my midyear grades will pull me through.

What'd you get a C in last year?

I know a couple kids from my school (in wake county) that got in with a lower gpa, and a couple C's as well. Are you from the Charlotte area or something? Does that matter if its an overrepresented area of NC?
