How do you get involved in research with a professor?

I was just browsing around CC when I decided to look in the Summer Programs forum (I have never looked around here before). I looked through a few threads about doing research with a professor, and this intrigued me. I've never really heard about doing something like this. How exactly could I get involved? I'm a junior in HS, live in the Boston area, and am interested in Psych. I found a great link on the Boston University website that lists each Psych professor and their research interests. Would I just send them an e-mail and let them know I'm interested? I've never had any research experience either.
