How do you guys feel about a spelling bee fundraiser?

Do you guys think that high school kids would participate in a spelling bee? Im not talkingabout the kids on CC (cuz i know they would hehe) but im talking about most average high school teenagers? Do you think they would care? I think it would be very effective.

Let's take a poll!

Yes: 1
No:

if facebook is any indication, most “average” people are terrible spellers. hahaha

but u should try it anyway, u never know…

yea but that happens when people are just talking informally, not being expected to have perfection in their dialogue. Im sure the situation would be different when you’re in a contest, pressured by other competitors.

Plus, it doesn’t take alot of intelligence to spell anyway so it wouldn’t be TOOO much of a daunting task for teens

No! You already had four years to participate in spelling bee. Let it end in 8th grade.

I doubt high school spelling bee would be anymore impressive or interesting.

^But it would just be one day? And it would be a for a good cause

ugh that sounds lame, unless you brought booze n herb no one would show up

Hmmm okay

We have
Yes: 1
No: 3

I need more ppl for the poll to be representative of the general pop. of teens

^^

Ohh, now I understand what you mean by spelling bee fundraiser. haha, sorry I thought you were talking about something else. How would it work then?

Simple:

I will use the auditorium of my school as the podium. Try to advertise as much as possible with my debate team (i.e. making PA announcements, telling my homeroom and other classes and have other members of the debate club do the same)
Pick one day after school ( or if the principal lets me do this: pick one day during school most likely the last period of class before school ends) and have my debate club advisor be the spelling bee judge. I will be the emcee

Here are the rules:
* Each competitor must spell the word, and then use it in a sentence.
The contest should begin with easier words for the first few rounds and progress to harder words in the later rounds.
As each competitor takes his or her turn, if they misspell the word, the next competitor has a chance to steal the word.
Spelling teams can be comprised of three or four participants so individual contestants are not singled out.
When a team misses two words, they are disqualified from that round.
Getting a list of spelling bee words from the dictionary or via an online dictionary ensures there is no cost to you.
Remember, distribute the list of words to the emcee and judge so they are well prepared for the competition.
Two winning teams go on to the finals.
The last team standing wins the spelling bee.

If the fundraising turns out to be great, as in hundreds of dollars, then we will donate that money to other clubs in the school as well (not just for debate)

how are you gonna make money? under the table betting?

How do you raise money?

Well it will be $5 per person that wants to compete and 15 for a 4-member team.

Prizes will be given at the end of the spelling bee.

This one club did this at my school a couple years ago, I thought it was very clever. They held a guitar hero tournament. Not sure how much money they made though.

yeah, do something fun like a movie night or whatever not a spelling bee… that’s boring man… sorry if i’m being discouraging haha

^that’s interesting.

So…can we continue the poll?

Okay. Spelling bee is out…i will try to think of more ideas and then you can guys can help me rate them!

Well how do you guys feel about a movie-ticket fundraiser?
It’s simple. I have an order form from a website. I download and give a copy to each member in the club to help out with the fundraiser. Basically, you have to sell movie tickets for $8.50 per ticket, which is cheaper than most theaters around here ($10.50)
For every ticket sold to a person, We get 1 dollar and the other $7.50 is sent to a company which will then place an order on all the tickets needed to be bought. The movie tickets are usable for AMC/LOEWS/just about any movie theater.

How much money are you hoping to make?

~150ish but 300 dollars ideally for future tournaments as well. We need the money for tournament registration+ registering the players separately for each type of debate. Plus the bus fares b/c our school is poor as hell.
This is the first time we will be doing debating in over 30 years! So it has to be good.

I also would like to make money for other couple clubs because they could really use them.

Theoretically, I would need to sell 300 Movie tickets lol to achieve the aim. This is why i was thinking a spelling bee would be effective. It would be a one day event and ideally alot of people would participate to raise the money easily

Sorry, I don’t think that would work since I doubt you would be able to sell 150-300 movie tickets.

And to yield $300 with the spelling bee, you’d need ~80 participants. Do you think there are going to be at least 80 interested people for the spelling bee?
