What type of sports or activities do you do to stay fit in college? How long does it take for you to exercise weekly?

Lift 3-4 days a week at the gym, do a ton of pushups in my room, run a few miles several nights a week whenever I feel like it, hike through the woods two or three times a week. I used to play intramural soccer and flag football but haven’t done that lately. So all in all, if I had to put a number on it I’d say 6-10 hours a week. Sometimes more, sometimes less; it varies.

coke. . .

um…walking from class to class is what i’m planning for my exercise routine for next year ;]

I do P90X. I see great results and it’s only an hour a day.

Crossfit…

use the stairs instead of the elevator, eat healthy, doing something that requires you to move your body, if you have any steep hills near walk up and down it everyday.

make ‘you’ the most important thing during your day, not your education. I know, sound crazzyyy… but it’s THE best way to live.

In the fall semester I went to the gym 2 hours monday wed and friday to lift weights. The main reason I workout is so I can be a better/more complete basketball player. I could care less about looking muscular for girls or stuff like that, I just do it to help my game.

The gym here at UC Merced opens at 6am so thats when I go and I finished at about 8am. I don’t know what its like at other UC’s, but the gym here gets packed in the evening. Its ridiculous if you ask me. From 6pm onward its so crowded, youll have trouble doing what you want to do. One time I passed by at midnight (just came from the library) and it was still packed! All the treadmills, bikes, machines etc were being used. By going at 6am, I have the entire rest of the day to look forward to, I have practically the whole gym to myself, and I don’t have people ogling me when I’m benching or whatever.

This spring semester, due to a change in my class schedule from fall (my first classes M-W-F are 11:00pm) I go from 6am to 10am. My problem in the fall semester was all I did was lift weights, I didn’t get much done as far as cardio went (not to mention actual basketball). So now I lift from 6am to 8, run 2 miles on the treadmill, stretch and hit the bball court (which is also empty so I have the whole court to do drills without people bugging me) for a couple hours of drills.

So this semester I’ve made improvements in my cardio as well as my basketball skills (not to mention strength training). I do all this because I want to try out for the basketball team in the fall.

Another thing I have noticed this semester is diet makes a HUGE difference. Last semester I would eat burgers alot and generally anything that was readily available. This semester I only eat what is ‘useful’ to my body. The thing is if you are really trying to get into shape, your body needs all the energy it can get (not just to actually workout, but to recover during rest days). You can only eat so much in a day. Everytime you eat “junk”, like say you eat 2 candy bars, then during your next meal your not going to eat as much because you filled up on a couple of candy bars earlier. Those candy bars won’t do anything for nourishing your body, and you ate less during your meal (which your body was counting on to nourish) so its like a double whammy. I’m playing intramural basketball this semester. The games are Sunday nights at 8pm. When I get back to my room its almost 10pm and Im getting ready for sleep to hit the gym Monday morning. Earlier in the semester, when I would get back after the game, sleep, wakeup and hit the gym, I was tired as HELL. The worst part was the treadmill. I’m not in really bad shape, but I could BARELY finish 1 mile on the treadmill. I just kept staring at the distance tracker praying for it to hurry up and get to 1.00 so I could get off and not feel bad about myself. Anyways one sunday night after a game I decided to eat a couple of granola bars. Next morning at the gyM I felt great. When I got to the treadmill I made it to 2 miles and I felt like I could keep running for years. So the moral of this paragraph is nutrition is important. :)

My advice is, if your going to wake up 1st thing in the morning (like I do) for the gym, try to make it so that on your rest days you can sleep in. Last semester I was fine as far as sleep went. I woke up early M-W-F, and slept in Tues and Thurs (not to mention the weekend). This semester I have a 730am class on Tues and Thurs. So 5 days a week I have to wake up at 530am, and as I’ve learned these past couple of months, 2 days of sleeping in (the weekend) does NOT help you catch up on sleep. Its gradual, as each week goes on you’ll get more and more tired. This semester has been hell for me as far as sleep goes. So make sure you get some sleep :).

I ride a bike. It gets me to and from places without wasting time.

It’s a fairly hilly campus here, and if it’s within 5mi, I bike. Most of the time, it’s faster than the bus. In fact, even if you had perfect timing for the bus, biking time would be pretty much equivalent.

I lost 60lb over four months that way. Used to be really obese, but now I’m considered fit. My diet has not changed significantly from the past.

excelblue, that’s awesome! See simple, right, changes can make a huge difference. That’s one less person we have to worry about with obesity in the future in the US. i Hope you can keep it up :)

take advantage of the free gym your school provides you. I take a book and read it during my cardio, I get alot of reading done and I look forward to going because I wanna read my book!
