Staying fit in college?

Here are several survey-type questions for college students I was just curious about:

1) Are you a guy or a girl?
2) How often do you work out (cardio, sports, or weight-lifting) each week? And for how many hours per day?
3) Where do you work out (around the campus--if you're jogging or running, at the campus gym, in your dorm doing pushups/situps)?
4) Have you gotten the freshman fifteen?

Guy
2/3. I workout in one form or another every day - I usually do weights with light cardio 5 days a week and run 2 days a week. The weights and light cardio is done in a gym, usually early in the morning for 2 hours and the running is done on streets and around town, usually for around 45-60 mins.

No - I eat fruit w/ milk for breakfast, have a crappy lunch (as in bad for you, like fast food) and then either some sort of large salad or soup for dinner.

1.) Guy
2.) 1mi uphill commute via bike to classes each weekday, 5mi/day mostly-flat shopping commute three days per week. Occasional 30mi cardio every month or so.
3.) The streets are awesome, whether walking, running, or biking.
4.) Nope; I actually lost 60lb by the end of my freshman year. My diet was mostly the same.

cocaine…

Girl

When I can. On a good week, 4 days; on a bad one, none. When I do get around to it, about 1-1.5 hours.

I always focus on doing cardio (I prefer to run outside but I have bad knees + weather depending, I may do the elliptical sometimes), and then ab works, and then free weights as I see fit–recently, working on my upper arms.

No… 10 lbs. Really annoying. I think a lot of it has to do with finals coinciding with my birth control. I’m actually using the summer to lose weight, instead of losing weight for the summer.

1) Girl.
2) When I feel like it/get around to it which varies between about 1-3 times/week for maybe an hour.
3) Usually the gym, sometimes the basement.
4) Nope. The only time I gained during this year was over Christmas break when I ate more and did less. I lost during the first semester and stayed fairly constant during the second after losing the holiday weight.

Guy.

Lifting 3x a week (1 hour), Running 3x a week (3 miles).

School gym and running the perimeter of the campus.

I have gained some weight this semester, but it’s all part of my plan to put on a bit more muscle.

Girl

3-4 times a week, 1-2 hours a day. Aerobics, pilates, running, weights (depends on the weather, my mood)

my school had a huge gym that was free for all students. But I worked out at home mostly (since I didn’t stay on campus)

Nope! I am actually only a couple pounds heavier now that I’ve graduated college

my advice for the freshman 15 is to eat healthy and encourage those around you to eat healthy too, it will be much easier to stay on track. If you’re not staying on campus, then I’d advise NOT to eat on campus and bring your own meals. Whether you’re at home or in your own apartment, cook nutritious foods. There isn’t much on campus that’s good for you.

1) Are you a guy or a girl?

Guy

2) How often do you work out (cardio, sports, or weight-lifting) each week? And for how many hours per day?

Never; 0

3) Where do you work out (around the campus–if you’re jogging or running, at the campus gym, in your dorm doing pushups/situps)?

N/A-see my response to question #2-I walk to class if that counts.

4) Have you gotten the freshman fifteen?

Yes, but I then lost 60 lbs sophomore year. All I did was get off the meal plan and cook everything from scratch.

Girl

1 - 1.5 hours 5x a week. Cardio and weights or yoga/pilates (I go to a group fitness class) depending on the day.

School gym. Has all the equipment and classes.

I gained 10 lbs at one point but I didn’t notice since I don’t have a scale and my clothes all fit fine. I’m now back to the high school weight.

Female

6 days a week - I bike for 40-50 minutes 3x a week, every other day MWF; lift weights for about 30 minutes THS, rest on Sunday (only started maybe a month ago, started this routine two/three weeks ago)

School gym

I might have gained about 10 pounds but I think that was before school started…Senior 10? I don’t know, I’ve been consistent in weight my whole freshman year though :]

Guy

5 days a week. 1 day each for Chest/Abs, Back, Shoulders, Bi’s/Tri’s, Legs. Each weightlifting session runs approx 1-1.5 hrs. I do HIIT cardio for 25 minutes directly following each weightlifting session.

I have the advantage of having one of the best campus gyms around, thanks to the '96 Olympics

I did when I was a freshman, more than 15 actually. Since then I’ve dropped a good 60lbs and bulked up a bit.

1) Are you a guy or a girl?

Guy

2) How often do you work out (cardio, sports, or weight-lifting) each week? And for how many hours per day?

I run 2 miles in the morning before class, sometimes go and play football/frisbee in the afternoon so about an hour and a half of exercise on average everyday.

3) Where do you work out (around the campus–if you’re jogging or running, at the campus gym, in your dorm doing pushups/situps)?

I run the perimeter of campus, I do pushups/sit-ups in my room when my roommate isn’t around.

4) Have you gotten the freshman fifteen?

Yes, I put on 10 pounds, however I’m pretty sure that’s from the campus food and my eating habits. I’m gonna try and cook some next year myself.
