I've been reading a lot of chance threads and result threads
and it seems like everyone is doing an immense amount of volunteering, clubs, etc.
But there's only 7 spaces in the common app for ECs.
I was wondering how everyone fits those in, or are you just leaving some out.

^for the commonopp, i believe there’s a limited number of spaces. if you want to list ALL your extracurriculars (would not recommend this–just list the ones you’re most involved in); there is a supplementary information section towards the end if you feel you have more information than you can fit.

You can also attach a resume of EC’s if you want too.

Yes, I attached a chart outlining mine since the common app was insufficient

but don’t they advise you not to do that?
do a lot of people attach resumes?

or, if you’re like most people, you can limit your resume to the activities that actually matter lol.

Don’t make a resume, resumes are for employers. Make a chart of all your ECs and write 2-3 sentences explaining your interest in it, what you did, and how you/they benefited.

thanks everyone!

No they don’t advise you not to add additional information. They ask you to put down your ECs in order of their importance to you on the 7 available spots, then put the rest on the additional information box at the end. You can just list it there in the same format as you did on the EC page - numbers of hours, duration of the activity, role etc.

hmmm ya i’m a bit confused on that as well and would like a solid answer if you’ve done a lot of ECs that dont all fit on the common app, is it a good idea to attach a resume/list of extra ones? or will that come across badly to the adcoms (if they even bother to read it, haha…)

It is a good idea to list the 7 most important ones on the activity part of common app, and list the rest on the additional information part. It does not come across badly to the adcoms - the app is the one who told you to list whatever additional information you want. If you want to do a resume, or a chart of everything you did, including the ones already listed in the activity section, that’s fine too. Adcom is not going to be like “Oh no! Repeat ECs! Resume! Additional activities! REJECT!!”.

To put your mind at ease

Extracurricular Please list your principal extracurricular, community, volunteer and family activities and hobbies in the order of their interest to you. Include specific events and/or major accomplishments such as musical instruments played, varsity letters earned, etc. To allow us to focus on the highlights of your activities, please complete this section even if you plan to attach a resume.

Additional Information If there is any additional information you’d like to provide regarding special circumstances, additional qualifications, etc., please do so in the space below or on an attached sheet.

From Common App

MANY will disagree with me, but I find it hard to believe that, if an extracurricular activity will make an honest difference to your application, it will not fit in one of the seven CommonApp slots.

^^

Maybe it would, maybe it wouldn’t, who knows. So many qualified, over qualified, applicants apply to good universities every year, it’s hard to say exactly what tip the scale one way or another. At the very least it can’t hurt you, and at best, it can help you, so why not? You already done them, it doesn’t take long at all to list them, and you can reuse the same thing for every college application (if some of your colleges aren’t common app).

what do you mean wishywashy?

bump???

You don’t have to attach all your ECs. You should only attach the ones that you care about and are actively involved in.
