How does College Board score reporting work? (How to best use the free reports)

If you're taking the SAT this weekend and plan to take the SAT-2 in June and may take the SAT yet again next fall...

...is there any value to sending schools the four score reports included with the SAT registration fee?

Specifically, does the College Board just send schools that one set of scores? Or will they send later SAT scores to those four schools? If the College Board only sends those May SAT scores, it seems to me a student will have to pay for additional score reports anyway -- even for those four schools that received them for "free." In which case, a student might as well wait to see the scores (if they have the luxury of time and aren't hitting an admission deadline) and finish their College Board testing (SAT / SAT-2) before ordering score reports. Is that correct?

And what about SAT-2 scores? Do they also get forwarded as part of the price that's included for the SAT...or do you need to pay separately to forward those? In other words, when you pay to forward those or order those scores as your "free" reports (and assuming the SAT-2 is taken after the SAT) do the SAT scores also get forwarded? Or does that order only cover your SAT-2 scores?

For each test date, you get to send 4 free scores. Many kids chose not to send the free reports to their top schools because they don’t yet know the score.

How much does it cost if you send the scores at a later date? Does it vary with AP/SAT/SAT2?

With any given test (SAT Or SAT II) and use of four free sends, the College Board will send that test’s scores and any prior (both SAT and SAT II). Thus, you can wait until you take a future test to send May scores free to four colleges. Nevertheless, CB does not automatically send future tests if you choose four colleges for a current test. In other words, if you choose four colleges for a free send of May tests, the only way you can send future scores to those particular colleges free is to list them as a free send on a future test.

To send scores other than via the free sends costs $9.50 per college for SAT/SATII and $15 for AP (in both cases they send all existing scores to the college unless you choose not to send one or more)

I’m taking the SAT 1 and 2 in exactly the same manner as you.

I too will not be sending my free reports this May since I believe it would not really help in my application, I’ll simply want to know the scores first, THEN send it along with the SAT2 in June.

Even if I would want to apply to more than 4 colleges, I’ll have to send the extra SAT2 for those anyway, so there’s really no use.

Is it disadvantageous to send bad scores to colleges?

Excellent answers everyone. That’s what I expected, but thank you all for clearing that up.

@ ishanz: I think most colleges have a policy of selecting your best scores. Some take the best scores from one date (e.g. the 540 M / 600 CR / 1140 overall from May over the 560 M / 570 CR / 1130 overall from June) and some take the best scores (the 560 M from June and the 600 CR from May). I have no idea what goes on behind closed doors and whether they ignore really bad scores. You can also use the College Board’s Score Choice feature with some colleges – although I have heard admission officers at schools that participate in Score Choice encourage applicants to send all their scores anyway.

I would check out the web sites of the specific schools you’re interested in to see what their policies are and determine whether any of them have different approaches, such as averaging multiple test scores instead of selecting the best scores.

whats the point of sending in scores? I had asked my dean whether or not I should send scores to any colleges and he just told me not to worry about it. I took my first SAT today and I do not remember the proctor or anyone mentioning anything about score sending and reports etc… What are the advantages/disadvantages of sending scores??

Btw if this helps, I took my first SAT in May (Today) and I plan on taking SAT II’s in June and SAT again the fall.

I am confused about sending free score reports too, and since we have only till May 10th… here’s my question:

I took the Oct 09 SAT, and then I took it again yesterday (May SAT). My scores from the first time are decent, but nothing great. The first time I didn’t use score choice because I knew I would be taking the test again. This time, however, I thought I’d send it to four schools. Would they receive both my scores? Or will I be able to select which score I want to send? (though I wonder how to do that since I have no idea how I’ll be scoring this time. :expressionless: )

And I would love to hear your opinions. Should I use the free reports or not?
Thanks guys :)

I have same questions here.
I took SAT 2 Math last year. The score was good.
Today, I took SAT 2 Bio.
If I want to send scores to 4 colleges for free, do I must choose the unknow SAT 2 bio scores to send? Or I will be given a choice to send the SAT 2 Math from last year without cost?

I sent May scores to 4 schools. I was able to use score choice to select some scores.
