How does retaking failed courses affect admissions?

I'm currently taking Statistics and I might end up with a D at the end of the semester. Of course I'm going to try to boost it up, but still. If I do end up with a D, I'm definitely going to retake the course either next semester or over the summer.

So out of curiosity, if I were to retake the class and get a higher grade, how would it affect my admissions to a UC? I was originally a Psych major, so I needed Stat, but I decided to go into biology. And that's most calculus. I don't really need Stat, although it will hurt my grade if I don't retake it.

get an A and it will look better than getting a B.
get a B and it will look better than getting a C.
get a C and it will look better than not retaking.
get a D/F/W and it will look worse than not retaking it.

retaking a class will obviously look bad but if you do well in the retake, it will look considerably better.

But will the retake ruin of my chances of transferring to say, UC Davis? Could I still sign the TAG?

you’d probably have to talk to a transfer rep/cc counselor about that. I would think that if you have retaken it for a passing grade, you should be fine. But make sure with a counselor.

try academic renewal? (i think that is what its called)

i have to do it for my poli sci class (non pre-req) … go to your admissions / records office and they should have info / a paper that is basically a petition to drop it from ur gpa calculations.
