Yes? No? (So 4 recs altogether -- 1 counselor, 2 teachers, 1 additional.)

I don’t know what, if any, official policy there is. My son submitted 4 letters, the usual GC and 2 teachers. He also submitted one from a professer at a nearby LAC where he had taken Calc 2. My son was accepted and is now a student at Swat. Good luck!

I don’t think any one of the people who responds on this forum really knows anything about how the admissions process works and stuff like that, so, I don’t think you’ll get the answer you’re looking for. But based on common sense I would say that there’s not much reason to have an additional recommendation letter unless you feel that the other person can say something about you that your counselor and two teachers can’t. If it helps, I did not send any additional recommendations.

@ dchow08 – heh, I know no admissions officer is going to be lurking on this forum, but I was hoping someone (or knows someone) who submitted an additional rec and got back good results would ensure me, like nursekay.

My daughter sent a fourth recommendation – from the director a significant community service program where she was involved. Nobody at her school knew anything about it, so wouldn’t have been able to discuss. The service project was the topic of her main essay, so it was an important piece of the application.

The extra recommendation did not keep her from being accepted. I think if there is a significant reason, then it’s fine. If it’s just fluff, then I wouldn’t do it.

I submitted 4 letters from teachers and my gc rec. and I was accepted. I felt like each letter offered a different perspective on me so I didn’t think it would hurt to send all of them. If that is the case with you, teahouse, I would just send them all. Swarthmore told me that they read everything; just make sure it will add something to your application.

Thanks guys. My 4th rec is going to be from a supervisor who worked closely with me last summer on a project I was especially proud of. It’s a relief to know that an extra rec is not looked down upon and the admissions team wouldn’t immediately toss it out! :P

Wait, how do you add extra recs? On my school forms thing on Common App, there isn’t an “Add Recommendation” button…

You can just mail them in as supplemental, I’m presuming.

ya you get your additional recommender to mail his letter directly to the school, provided that he included your identification information in his letter.

Yeah. Maybe have him put “RE: Application #XXXXXX” on the outside of the envelop just for easy filing.

You can also mail it with your application just have him seal it and you can include that with a cover letter listing what is included and what is coming from other sources.
