Hi,
I have read that California has banned Affirmative Action, making it illegal to use race as a factor in admissions. However, I believe Stanford University still uses race in its admissions process, which makes me unsure of how the law works. Does it only remove race as a factor in admissions for public schools like UC Berkeley, or does it apply to all schools in California?
It does not apply to a private school like Stanford.
The ban simply means that public universities are not allowed to take race into account when making admissions decisions. It means that the universities cannot discriminate against students because of their race, but it also means that universities have a more difficult time taking into account systemic, racially-influenced factors that may impact a student’s admissibility.
As was stated, though, this only applies to public colleges and universities in California.
Since @juillet has answered the question, I am closing the thread. There is currently no thread on CC where race in admissions is allowed to be discussed (the dedicated thread was closed after people couldn’t post civilly).
