How does this school afford...

such nice stuff to send to potential applicants? I'm not interested in the school, but I do have to say I was very impressed with the various materials presented in a plastic case.

Same! That was really extensive, impressive stuff. I'd say arguably the best I've gotten.

Their endowment is several billion. It's not like they're struggling to make ends meet.

Even though our endowment is smaller than many of our peers, from what I've seen we have a huge operating budget--for our size. Plus, Hopkins has been raising and spending a great deal of money lately. 2.8 Billion raised so far for the current capital campaign.

yeah i got mine in the mail today.

my reaction: holy crap.

What exactly are these things? Anyone share a picture?

I'm already at Hopkins but I remember last year getting those nice red viewbooks with the yellow spiral bindings. Those were nice.

coolguy: the plastic case mailing includes:

JHU undergrad application

info about undergraduate programs in liberal arts

a visitors guide to baltimore (the backside is a big poster of the JH campus)

CSS/Financial Aid Info

really extensive spiral-bound viewbook that's about 65 pages

that's the minimum. i may have lost something from it in the last week.

interesting. when i applied (two years ago) i didn't get anything until i visited and then it was only the big red book and an application. nice.

Glad you all like the new viewbook and our prospective applicant mailing.

I added pictures of our new, snazzy black-covered, spiral-bound viewbook to a recent blog entry:
http://hopkins.typepad.com/hopkins_insider/2007/09/its-new-to-us-a.html

Students who have requested to receive materials from Hopkins via our online request form (http://apply.jhu.edu/contact/webinquiry.html) will receive the clear plastic mailing detailed by flybyzephyr. Each package contains the same information, viewbook, application, baltimore guide, CSS info. Some will have our liberal arts brochure (purple) others will have our Engineering brochure (black).
