Current junior here. My school only offers 7 points for AP classes, and it does not show my unweighted overall GPA and unweighted individual grades: just my weighted. How does UF interpret and recalculate this according to their UF GPA calculation. Do they add even more weight to my already weighted AP classes? Thanks for anyone who can clear up this confusion.
Does your HS transcript have letter grades (A, B, C, etc.)? If so, UF takes your grades, drop any + and -, and attaches points to each one.
A=4
B=3
C=2
D=1
They will then add +1 points for AP, IB, AICE, and Duel Enrollment (DE) classes, and +0.5 points for honor classes.
Then you have UF’s weighted GPA. This is what they use in admissions. If your school uses % instead of letter grades, they convert the % over to the same 4 point scale.
UF does consider how many AP classes are available at your school. Some schools don’t offer any AP/IB/AICE/DE/honor classes, so UF will take that into consideration.
UF will use your school’s weighted GPA, only for comparing you with other students in your school, or school district (if at all).
Yeah I get that but my questions is… what if my school already weights my grades and just shows my weighted grades… would they add another 1.0/0.5 GPA points to my already weighted grades? Like my school does not show unweighted grades.
What does your school transcripts show? I’m assuming it’s not a letter grade? is it a percentage? It can’t only be a “GPA”, since that’s a calculation, not a grade.
@MetronoxIZ As @Gator88NE said, they look at the Grade (A, B, C, etc.), which is unweighted. Does the transcript or the term report cards show the grades? UF will NOT add weight on top of the school’s weight. In fact, they completely ignore the school’s weight and weigh the unweighted grades themselves with their own convention (0.5 for Honors, 1.0 for AP and IB). Also note, they only look at the Core classes (Math, Science, English, Foreign Language, Social Sciences) and they ignore +'s and -'s. They exclude electives and even some required classes like Phys Ed, Health, etc.
The way it works is that you go into their portal (Student Self-Reported Academic Record) and input each grade from each grading term. You give them the course name, there is a drop-down to identify which subject it is (Math, Science, etc), the grade and whether it is AP, Honors, IB, etc. Then they take it from there. From my recollection, they don’t show you the calculated UF Core GPA, but I might be wrong about that.
Bottom line is that they normalize the GPAs by weighing them in a standardized manner. You have to give just them the raw grade and whether it is Honors, AP, IB, etc.
Yeah I get it. I swear to god this is not me but my friend is trying to cheese the system. Since our school only shows weighted grades (in percents) he is saying that he will try to put his weighted grades in the UF portal and it should match up with his transcript, and since the transcript only shows weighted grades he thinks he will get away with it. So basically, he thinks UF will add 1.0AP/.05H weight to his already weighted grades, because he believes UF won’t know any better. Again, THIS IS NOT ME – I SWEAR! Do you think he would get away with that?
Not really. If it’s a Florida HS, UF is very familiar with how they do grades. If it’s an OOS HS, UF already tweaks the way it views GPA and will get the HS info.
He should put into the portal (SSAR), what’s on his transcripts. He shouldn’t try to remove the weighting or change the numbers.
They just subtract your AP classes and recalculate your GPA.
