How early will the SAT count for college? Taking the sat as a freshman or sophomore?

Hi, I am currently an 8th grader who is studying for the SAT for Johns Hopkins CTY. I am doing it mainly for the math, and in the two practice tests I’ve taken, I got 680 and 800. I was wondering how early I can take the SAT and have it be the one I will use to apply to college to? I am thinking, if it is possible, to take it late freshman-early sophomore time, since I will take a decent amount of AP’s Junior year. Has anyone had experience like this? Will this be negative on my college applications? Thanks for any advice.

My son took the ACT as a sophomore. Did fine…one and done. Never took the SAT.

I think if you are prepared and can do well, it’s to your benefit to get testing over early.

If you take the SAT in 8th grade, your scores get expunged. Just be sure you get a copy of them for programs like CTY. My kid took it in middle school for NUMATS and CTY, but her scores were a lot higher junior year (nearly perfect, 2380 on 2400 scale). Some top colleges make you send all high school scores, too. My advice is to wait, then brush up on the math prior to taking junior year. Your reading, writing, and analysis skills will be much stronger then.
