Pre med student - how easy is it to secure volunteer spots at local hospitals during the school year? Chances for summer internship at hospital in NYC next summer?

Thanks

I would suggest against doing that during the school year - the “local hospital” is rather far and you’d want to focus on your studies or do other activities. This isn’t high school anymore - you’d probably want to dedicate more time to your courses and other things. The hard part wouldn’t be getting that position, it’s getting to the hospital and balancing your time.

And from what I’ve seen pre-med students generally use their extra time doing research for professors rather than volunteering at a hospital

I would probably just do research during the school year. Cornell offers an Urban Semester Program through the College of Human Ecology (I wasn’t in HumEc and still participated in the program). You get to do rotations in NYC (at NY-Presbyterian and other hospitals throughout the area) and participate in weekly health-related seminars during the summer.

I definitely recommend this program, it was a great experience and helped me a ton for med school interviews.

You should be getting research experience and clinical experience during the school year. It’s not an either or type of thing. It’s really not hard to travel to the hospital once a week for 4 hours to get your hours in.
