How exactly do you self-study for APs?

I know this maybe a wierd question to ask on CC, but I really am confused since nobody I know has ever actually done this in my school. After visiting CC I became aware of this idea of "self studying". Does this mean you simply get the books and study them youself? I have looked through that Free online Ap courses website provided by a previous user. Is this enough to get a high score on an AP Test?

You study the material on your own, sign up for the AP test and take it in May.

Me too. I've never heard of self study until I've got on this site.

I just get textbooks and prepbooks and study.

I passed three tests with 5's through self studying so far.

^...Wow you're impressive

Well, I have only self-studied ap nsl and ap bio because i was taking courses that tangentially touched on these topics. I recommend the AP prep books over textbooks because you don't want to waste time studying unnecessary content.

It took me one month to comprehensively understand these topics up to a point where I could explain a topic to someone else without looking back to a book.

*ap nsl *

??

I think some schools have different names for the same classes, like at my school its AP American History instead of APUSH, but its the same test...maybe AP NSL is another name that the school uses for one of the AP tests.
