Self-study?

How do you self-study for AP classes? Is there an online site you have to apply for?
Or do you just buy an AP (class you're taking) book and sign up for the AP exam?
ANY info. would be helpful.

I posted this in response to your question in another thread, but here it is again. Basically, self-studying is when you learn the AP material on your own time instead of taking it as a class at school. Normally, you just buy a review book (and sometimes a textbook) for the chosen AP class. You can also supplement with online videos or courses (i.e. Khan Academy, Hippocampus, etc.). From what I’ve read on CC, some APs are very easy to self-study, as in you could learn the material in a weekend (i.e. Human Geography, Environmental Science, Psychology, etc.), and others are not recommended AT ALL for self-studying (i.e. Chemistry). And you just sign up for the AP test(s) you want to take when the times rolls around. I don’t have a lot of experience with this, so it would probably be a good idea for you to read other threads on this forum regarding self-studying. Good luck to you if you decide to self-study. :)

The point of self-studying is that you do just that: study by yourself. You can do as much or as little as you want and in any format you want. Anyone can take whatever AP test they want just by signing up, whether they’ve taken a class, studied on their own, or just decided they want to take it with no preparation at all.
That being said, many people who self-study have similar methods, including using prep books, tutoring, looking at online coursework, studying with a few peers, and taking practice AP tests.

Gahh, it seems elf4EVA posted while I was still typing, so some of this is repetitive. Such is life.

Thanks for the info guys! It was helpful!

Well, self-studying would imply studying for a test without the class.

Most people just buy prep books and go from there. That’s what I did for about 12 of my 21 APs.

Some of you had self-studied the AP courses (such as AP Physics B or C) and passed the exams. I wonder how you self-study the laboratory component of the courses?

^ Guess C.

Best way to self study is to buy a barrons prep book (because it’s a god tier study book) and review throughout the year. AP tests are easy if you just take the class and buy a review book around April and just literally, you know, review.
