How far is everyone on their essays?

Thanks about the info on the interview. I’m applying for 11th grade. I’m wondering how I’ll do there socially since I missed the two most major years in high school.

Yeah I know, that’s what I was concerned about. As well as facing the most academically challenging year. That’s why I’m applying as a repeat sophomore.

I wonder if I should do that as well…It would seem kind of weird being the oldest person in all my classes and not going to college at the same time as my friends that don’t attend boarding school. What school is your top choice?

Definitely Andover. And many people have recommended to me that I apply as a repeat. If you have the financial means, I would do it. Oh and by the way Middlesex only accepts like 5 new juniors while Andover accepts 20, so it kind of depends on the school about how much they accommodate new juniors. Don’t worry, from what I’ve heard there are tons of repeats so it isn’t all that strange. And yeah that’s what I thought, it might be weird that I’m not going to college the same time as a lot of my friends. But then I remember that I already had a lot of good friends that were older than me and how it isn’t weird that they’d go off to college before me, so it would be pretty much the same for my other friends. I don’t know, it just seemed the pros outweighed the cons.

What’s your top choice?

Oh hey, helloel, you decided to apply as a repeat sophomore? Good to see you made your decision. Can you maybe list a couple reasons why you decided to repeat? I’m thinking about doing the same thing, but for freshmen year.

Thank you for the statistics, if you don’t mind, may I ask where you got them from? You made me sort of consider to apply as a reapeat sophomore. Would Harvard, Princeton, Yale, or Stanford have a problem with that is my question. My top choice is Deerfield, it reminds me of a high school princeton. I’m also very fond of the uniform and how they try to make the campus feel family like.

Colleges should not have a problem with it, as far as I know. I would definitely not be applying as a repeat if that was the case! I mean, you would be repeating for adjustment reasons, not because you were slacking academically.
As for the stats, I asked someone at Middlesex, and Andover has it on their website.
Yeah, I do get that sense from Deerfield as well, though I haven’t visited.

aaralyn: Yes, I am so glad to have finally made a decision! Even though it is pretty late in the process, but all I really had to do was to uncheck 11th and check 10th haha.
Well first off, 11th grade is the most academic grueling year for high school. What would make it harder is if you were new and trying to adjust to the academic caliber of boarding school. Also, being away from home is an adjustment to pile on top of a tough schedule, SAT prep, and college admissions.
Secondly, I felt that socially, it would be hard to get to know a lot of people. I thought that I might just get caught only hanging out with new 11th graders, since everyone had already been together a couple years. And I would barely have time to even try to branch out and meet new people.
Basically if I went an as an 11th grader, I would just be doing a whole lot of catching up and I feel like I wouldn’t really get to enjoy the boarding school experience

In your case, you still could get a good three years without tacking on an extra year of tuition. But I see why you’d want to repeat. I feel like a lot people have a strong sense of accomplishment when they are there for the full four years. And social integration would be extremely easier, well because nobody knows anyone! You have two great options, keep up with your parents opinions, that’s what ultimately made my decision. I always wanted to repeat, but they didn’t want to pay an extra year but would, and I didn’t want them to either, but then they talked to boarding school parents, changed their minds, and thought it best that I repeat, so I decided to!

You can get the acceptance numbers usually from the FAQ section on the websites. Usually there are less openings in the junior year, and hence the lower acceptance rate. Anyhow, I’m applying as a sort-of repeat as well? My school year runs differently, so I’m still a 9th Grader now, but Class of 2014. But anyway applying for 11th grade didn’t cross my mind because I know 11th is a tough year, and I don’t want to be thrown right into the midst of all that tough work without an adjustment/settling-down period.

@bellowing ok thanks again. Its kind of funny how I’m seriously considering being a repeat student. But I like being the class of 2014 :(

For the additional information section, could explain the reasons for a report card grade or gpa or do you save that for the interview

In my case I moved from California before my first progress report in 9th grade and unexpectedly came to Maryland (thinking I was going back home) and missed 2nd quarter and was enrolled at the worst school in Maryland the messed up my grades and had to get multiple grade changes. They also averaged off my math and English grade to a C even though at the new school i had an A in both classes since my previous school gave me a F in both classes. So where should I explain this situation?

The reason for the F’s at my previous school was because I was absent not for academic purposes.

Um, I would say both. Your interview is just to get a better idea of who you are, they usually won’t report word-for-word grade explanations and stats. It’s better to put it in writing, so that everyone that looks at your transcript will know.

ivyguy6: About maybe repeating, don’t let me make up your mind though. I’m just telling you what I’ve learned and what was best for me, maybe it’s not the best thing for everyone. But if you do ask an admissions officer they will tell you it is significantly easier to adjust as a 10th. Have you talked to your parents about it yet?

Back to essays, not repeating… I hate writer’s block. It sucks when you just can’t do any more.

I feel you. I’ve been staring at the same essay prompt for the past two days. I cannot write more than two sentences before having nothing else to say.

Which one? If there’s a choice, you could just change. Unless it’s one of those seriously annoying short answers…

I’m having the same issue. In fact, I’m working on my essays right now, but using CC as a procrastination tool. I feel the need to make sure my essays are perfect. So, I will begin to write something, and then I will erase it. Sometimes, I just can’t seem to come up with anything. I will literally stare at the screen for two hours.

It is one of the choice essays for Andover, but I feel that my concept is really good. I just…can’t translate my thoughts to words.

On an unrelated note, I’m applying to a day school that had an application consisting solely of multiple short answers. I almost screamed trying to complete it.

I actually prefer applications that consist solely of short answers. It’s much easier and isn’t as overwhelming.

Me too! I’m addicted to cc!
