How Good an EC is Student Government, Do you have to be President?Or is Any Senior Office Good?

K has been grade senator and is now considering making a run in higher office. It seems being the President is unlikely because there are many others running (trust me, it will not happen). However K thinks K may have a shot at the Vice Presidency. Does this add anything over being a grade senator or treasurer? Or is it only the President that gets that (very minor) boost? VP does have a lot of responsibility and will be a lot of work.

K is doing this out of genuine interest and has been involved since the beginning in school politics, as well as debate team. However, VP is a lot of work and if K it is viewed the same as if K were a grade senator instead I would prefer that (K would not).

In all honesty, it’s a perfectly fine EC, but is it any better to be Pres than VP, or treasurer? I don’t think so. A student gov position isn’t going to make or break an application. If you student wants to run, he should run. Why not, if he enjoys it wants to. Think of how many high schools in the US, and multiply all those positions, and you can see why it isn’t a huge boost. Of course, it’s possibly more impressive to be pres, but from the many similar posts I have read on this topic, there are a lot of senior posters out there who think student government is little more than a popularity contest. I think showing consistent involvement is the more importsnt aspect of being in student gov.

You know what is more important about being VP? What you do as VP.
On the application K should be able to say "VP, Student Council. Created and ran fundraising for XYZ charity, including working with administration, community outreach, recruiting of members, blah blah blah.
