How good are my odds of getting in.

UC Irvine is my current top choice in my list of UC's.I want to major in Political Science, since History and Politics are my strong points and interests.

How would you rate my odds?Would a increase in SAT score better my odds??

UC GPA:3.44
GPA (weighted):3.44
GPA (un-weighted):3.0
Class Rank:Almost top 20% but within top 25% (Class Size:901)
I took alot of AP and Honors classes.
SAT:1980
SAT II:720/620 (US/Biology)

Oh and I failed Pre-calculus this year. (D-/F)

Should I retake the class this fall as a senior?

My senior classes:
AP Government US/Comparative
AP Economics
AP Environmental Science
English IV (emphasis on Shakespeare literature)
Choir(Easy A)
Teacher Assistant(kind of a throw away class and easy A)

I got one more spot open for a math class.

not good…your sat scores are more than fine…but…gpa really hurts…

Your GPA is the only thing that might hurt you..other stats are fine. You SAT score is pretty good, so I don’t think you should take it again.

Your D-/F in Pre-Calc might hurt. UC’s normally do not like to see fail grades. You need to work hard on your essays and other parts of the application.

Your SAT scores are good, but your GPA is lacking like others said. Taking Calc again would be a good idea this year, as long as you do well in it. I would also recommend taking the SAT again, aim for 2050, so that they counter-balance your GPA.

EDIT: Senior grades don’t matter in admissions, so I suggest instead of doing Teacher Aide, take calc again. When you apply, you can explain your low calc grade towards the end of your application, mention that you’ll be re-taking the class. If you get a B that would be good.

your SAT scores are fine, but yea your gpa hurts a lot. you might consider dropping ap environmental science, switching from ap econ to regular econ and adding that math class. No D’s and F’s are allowed.

I don’t want to drop AP Economics because it’s a class that I actually think I’ll do well in.Plus I plan on majoring in Political Science.AP Environmental I heard was an easy A(I guess easy teacher) as long as you don’t take the exam.I don’t need to drop any classes since I still have a slot open…judging from the responses I’ll probably retake my precalc class instead of Stats.

Does the SAT at this point help at all?I’ve heard from many that I could get a perfect score of 2400 on it…and my chances are still slim because of my GPA.

you must take pre calc again, because UCs do not take Ds/ Fs. Too bad you didn’t take it over the summer. Of course a perfect SAT score would help, but a 2250+ would look really good. Honestly, your GPA seems really low though, average accepted weighted GPA is around a 3.9 I believe.

But try your ass off and you never know

Wait so your not considered for admission for UC if you have a D/F?I thought it was only that they won’t count it towards subject requirement and in order for you to get credit for the class you have to pass the 1st semester with a C or better…something like that.

^Hm, you may be right, will you meet the requirements for 3 years of math besides that? Hm, at my school, all they say is whatever you do, do not get a D/F

sorry I couldn’t be of more help

A guy from UC Davis Admissions in the UC General Forum told me that by passing Geometry and Algebra II I’ve validated Algebra I so I meet the minimum requirement. But can you use classes your senior year towards the subject requirement?

It would have been really good for you to retake Pre-calculus during the summer. You need to take it over to show you can do well. Maybe you could enroll in a cc and retake it during the fall so in addition to what you are taking at your high school. If you can’t do that then retake it instead of stats and work really hard.

Is it wise to take multiple classes of the subject of done bad since freshman year?I’ve had many different teachers,I’ve had tutors, tremendous help,I studied,I haven’t studied…IMO it doesn’t make a difference I still pretty much suck at math.

I’m really dedicating my last year of high school to what I want to do…but yeah to late for taking it at a community college,I’m going to retake it this coming fall and hope for the best…maybe i’ll do much better a 2nd time around. My coursework isn’t as heavy as my previous years (AP and Honors wise).Reason why I couldn’t take it over the summer at CC was because my parents wanted me to study for the SAT retake in Oct.Plus I had to put in some volunteer work.It would’ve taken over my entire summer.

Can anyone confirm or refute the, “a D and/or F disqualifies you from admission to a UC”?

Think about that for a second. You and I both know that straight A’s with a couple B’s is not required to get into UCI. They only take a maximum of 8 honors points. They aren’t “that” selective. Don’t let those outliers scare ya. People “apply” to UCI but aren’t enrolled.

I got a D in a class once and I still got in. I never made it up. It’s a strong incentive to disqualify you though. You have to explain it because I know a few (3-4) people who didn’t make it.

I think the best I’ve done in Math was A/A in Algebra I back in 8th grade. From then on it’s been C’s.

1)I’ve studied with friends
2)Friends have tutored me occasionally
3)I’ve asked help from the teacher after school
4)I’ve studied by myself
5)I’ve asked help from my parents

I get marginally worse scores, if I didn’t study all together which makes me feel like I wasted a lot of my time on this subject.I can study of the notes, the homework assignments, exams, the textbook, other textbooks, it doesn’t make that much of a difference.Math just isn’t my thing. But I’ve been able to “get by”.

I did same exact things this year hoping to get by and get my C in Precalc. For a lack of better words, my math teacher was a real ******.You don’t have to take my word for it,I mean half the class dropped after 1st semester because they were failing and the remaining people had D’s and C’s,few B’s and A’s.

I was actually passing the class 2nd semester with a C- up until like the last month or so of school, I failed a test badly which dropped my score down to a D,and we spent like a week reviewing for materials on the final that covered multiple chapters, so I ended up failing the final and got an F as a result. This is ridiculous if you look at my grades that semester, you know I’m not a bad student:

AP English Comp-A
Precalc-F
Spanish III-A
AP Psych-A
AP Bio-A
AP Art History-A

I mean on the surface, it doesn’t look like I put effort into that class, but I did.I even went in after school one day, and I said,“Mr. Armstrong can’t you just pass me with a D,are you really going to screw me over? This is my junior year, college apps are next fall, you can’t possibly do this to me”

Him:“I’ll think about it”

2 weeks later:F on my report card

You got any extra cirriculars? Not much you can do about your GPA to be honest… besides retake.

-I’ve been a member of Key Club International for 4 years (senior year included)
-Secretary of the Junior Statesmen of America Chapter of our local area (one year)
-Choir (one year)
-Peer to Peer support organization (2 years)

A D and/or F does not disqualify you from admission to a UC. If you do, however, end up with a D or F in a class, the UC’s won’t count it, meaning that you basically never took that class. A few of my classmates got D’s in AP Calc senior year before going off to a UC, but since AP Calc wasn’t a required class, nothing happened to them. But this might depend from situation to situation, so try to make up your D’s and F’s since it’ll show them that you’re actually trying. Hope this helps!
