How good is a 31?

sorry if i'm beating a horse to death, but i live in Cali where the SATs reign supreme. i took teh SATs and got a 1930 but then i got a 31 on the ACT on my first try, i have no idea on how to gauge the ACT though so umm right. any help would be appreciated. guidence or whatnot. and can anyone tell me if i can apply to Cornell University with some confidence with that ACT score? and is there anyway i can withhold that SAT score, though i have to submit SAT 2s anyway

Check percentiles. They are usually on the websites.
Also try this. It may be less accurate but still
31/36 * 2400 = your SAT score
this is siply 31 * 200 / 3 = 6200/3 = about a 2070ish. So you're sat is definetly better. I don't think you can withold the SAT score. CB usually sends them all IIRC.

Your ACT is better. The conversions are somewhat misleading. I've seen some charts that a 31 is a 2040, and some that say a 31 is a 2100-2150. By cross multiplication its a 2070, so its sort of all over the place. I got a 31 also. I'm hoping that colleges view it as the 2100-2150 because a 31 is a 98 percentile, which a 98 percentile on the SAT is probably much higher than a 2040. Colleges will see your SAT score, but they will use your ACT score because it is higher.

thanks a lot for answering guys, is a 31 good enough for ivies though? i'm applying early to Cornell!! ^_^

It depends on what school. Arts & Sciences it's probably too low. Engineering, as long as you did well in math and did well on Math SAT II's I think it should be fine.

hmm well at least will that put me in the running? i think if they look at me ECs i could be pretty convincing. i wrote three books. and yes i'm applying to CAS ED

haha cool! same here

Laurstar, don't discourage anyone.... stranger things have happened in the past : )

hey fedmom, im not discouraging anyone. :) you just misread it ;)
