How hard is it to get into UMich Industrial Engineering undergrad from Illinois?

Also, if you are from the program what was your SAT/ACT score, GPA and extracurricular activities or what are they for those that you know in the program.

I am only a sophomore but I have a 3.95 unweighted gpa and 4.41 ish weighted gpa.
I haven't taken the ACT but I think I will get something around a 32 and 34

I am treasurer of our class council, part of DECA, junior CFO of a investment club, on the tennis team, i volunteer a little bit but not a lot, was on math team freshman year but not anymore.

Are these enough extracurriculars, if not, what types should I join?

For Freshman admissions you don’t apply right into the major. You just apply to the college of engineering. The admittance stats are on the website. If you see something about department specific requirements (like GPA) that’s for transfers.

I’m in the department, but I can’t (nor can anyone really - even if they think they can) give you useful admissions advice. You look like you’re on the right track though.

is it easier to get into the college of engineering if you want to do industrial engineering and what were some of the things you had on your “resume”

As Vladenschlutte, the CoE admits students regardless of their “declared major”. It is not easier to get in if you list IOE as your major. With a 3.95 unweighed GPA, assuming you get a 33 on the ACT, you will have a shot. But as many have come to realize, Michigan is “hot” right now. Its applicant pool could increase by 15% each of the next three years. By then, you could be looking at 65,000 applicants for 16,000 acceptances (23% admit rate). The OOS admit rate would be under 20% if that is the case. In other words, Michigan would be a reach. Applying early and making it clear that Michigan is a top choice for you will help.

What are some things i can do to make me stand out?

The conventional wisdom is Michigan values grades and APs slightly more than other schools, and ACT slightly less than other schools. As for ECs, as far as anyone can tell they’ll value the same things other schools value. If you have a part time job that’s probably useful. I don’t think they’ll put much stock into DECA unless you win something, Investment Club unless you do something cool, or being on Math team unless you win something. That type of stuff is seen more as filler. Tennis team and regular volunteering (even just a couple of hours a week) is good. Regardless, your GPA and ACT are the main criteria.

Freshman admissions are highly random.

So the most important thing to get into the college of engineering is just grades and they don’t look much into your extracurriculars?

You will just be applying to the college of engineering. Last year the acceptance rate was 36% the median act was 32, the median math + cr sat was a 1410 and the median gpa was a 3.9 (source: [Facts + Figures | Michigan Engineering](http://www.engin.umich.edu/about/facts.html)). The out of state acceptance rate is lower and the stats are higher. Admission was more competitive this year and will likely only get more rigorous in coming years. I was accepted and intend to major in the ioe program with a 3.68 uw gpa and a 1600 m+cr sat but no buisness or engineering related extracurriculars. Just keep your gpa as high as possible in the next years as that is the admissions criteria you have the most control over

What type of classes should I take in high school other than AP Physics (BC)?
and
Are you saying that the deciding factors are just act and grades so extracurriculars and volunteering, essays, teacher reccomendations and stuff are just like extra that don’t matter much

Take as many AP classes as you can reasonably handle. Engineering schools are going to focus on math and science APs but doing well in unrelated APs will only help your application. Extracurriculars matter just not as much as grades and test scores, unless your extracurriculars are world class. I am a 4 year 2 sport varsity athlete and have completed approximately 300 hours of community service in addition to working a 40+ hour a week job over the summer. Michigan and other elite schools like to see that you are involved even if they don’t relate to your intended major. 99% of teacher recs are good so I am convinced colleges don’t put much weight in them unless they negative. Make sure your essay is well thought out and edited a great essay does not help you get in if you are unqualified but a terrible essay can certainly hurt your chances
