I was recently accepted into Cal Poly SLO with my major as Anthropology. However, I really want to switch my major over to Psychology since I’m currently taking AP Psychology as a senior right now, and I’m really interested in the subject and want to learn more about it. I know SLO makes it really difficult and nearly impossible to switch, but I was wondering if it’d be possible to since both majors fall under the same college.
And has anyone been successful in switching majors at Cal Poly?

The rumor that you have heard is only partially true. It is far easier to change majors today than in past years. However, most of that ease is changing majors within a specific college. For example, my son changed from General Engineering to Mechanical Engineering after one quarter and it basically took one conversation with the head of the department and it was then approved electronically. Good GPA, valid reason for the change, no problem. It was automatic.

You are lucky, Anthropology and Psychology are both in the Liberal Arts College. So, contact them and ask about major transfers within the Liberal Arts College. If the process of changing majors within the Engineering College is any indication, then it should not be a problem. Nevertheless, you must find out for yourself.

I know that changing majors between colleges, such as from Business to Engineering is very challenging, but not totally impossible. However, within a college it is supposed to be fairly straight forward. Keep in mind that you may have to be an Anthropology major for one quarter. My son had block scheduling his first quarter and was unable to change majors until after that first quarter was complete. The school prohibits change of major until after one quarter is complete. No problem – it was the first quarter that he actually needed to come to the conclusion of where he wanted to go.

From what I’ve heard from other people who have changed majors, it’s not as hard as you might think. As long as you take the required classes to change into the major and have the required GPA, it’s generally not a problem. Switching from anthro to psych shouldn’t be a problem. Talk to an advisor before classes start (like July or August or during SOAR if you go), and tell them you wanna switch and they’ll get you started on the process right away.

Yes, switching within a college is not hard. I think the problem is that students plan to get into a college with easier acceptance and then attempt to transfer into aerospace engineering or architecture. That would not be easy.

Hello, I am a current freshman that is transferring from Psychology to Economics. My process goes as this 1.) I send in an original eligability form which will determine if you could get in the major when you applied to Cal Poly. 2.) then you will attend a workshop of the college to learn more about the major transferring process. 3.) Lastly you will set up a contract with your counselor which will have you take certain classes and you must have certain GPA (for Business Admin transfer = 3.5, Economics transfer = 3.3; depends on how many sports in major) I would say you would be fine. If you have any more questions do ask.

I actually just recently switched majors from different colleges! And depending on which major it is that you want to switch to, it can be difficult, as in there are a lot of hoops to jump through. Not necessarily difficult in the sense that it’s academically impossible, but difficult as in juggling multiple things at once.
