I would like to major in astrophysics, how hard is it to transfer from a 2 years community college to UCB or UCLA?

What should my GPA be?

And while I'm on it, what is the TAP system?

Thanks!

TAP stands for transfer alliance program, it basically requires you to take up a specific amount of honours classes, and as you apply you will receive priority consideration into UCLA's college of letters and sciences. The percentage rate for TAP students' admission into UCLA is pretty high.
Try to keep up a GPA of at least 3.5 to be competitive. But then, astrophysics is really not an impacted major.

This website shows you the average GPA of all astrophysics applicants and admits for the 2006 fall semester(UCLA)

As for Berkeley, I don't know much about it.

So yeah, do try to keep above a 3.50
I once considered going for astrophysics, but the amount of math terrified me :l

Good luck! I'm sure you'll do great. Feel free to ask more questions!

Thanks!
That's great help!

By the way, is the TAP program only offered in UCLA, or is there other programs simillar to it in other universities?

well i'm here. that says a lot! haha

hiall,

As far as I know, every UC but Cal have pretty well-developed TAP programs.

As far as GPA goes, it differs from campus to campus, but I'd say that a 3.5 or so would be what you'd want to shoot for.

If you are in TAP with UCLA, you can get into Astrophysics even with a GPA of 3.3. As everyone else have said here, you should shoot for at least a 3.5 :)

Well I had a friend who transferred from CC to UCLA with a 3.5. Although I'm not sure what she had to do

I've been hearing that transfering to UCB is a lot harder than to UCLA, is that true? What should my GPA be?

thanks anyway!

hiall,

I wouldn't say that it's "a lot harder" at all. In fact, I'd say that most majors are about the same, GPA wise, when it comes to transfer.

is it possible to transfer to UCLA and UCB any quarter? or do they just have admissions for fall?

Fall only.

well, I'd say UCLA is still easier than Berkeley due to the number of transfer applicants they admit each year:

UCLA : 5,534/13,277 - 41.68%

Berkeley: 3,078/10626 - 28.98%

you can get deferred for spring admission at ucb.

Whoops! Mea culpa! You're right, CF.

BTW, dhl, the ACTUAL numbers are more like this:

Cal: 3518/10550 33.3%
UCLA: 4845/11432 41.68

But can you actually apply for spring at UCB? or only if you get deferred from fall?

the latter. why are you interested in spring admission? just curious.

Well, i can finish all my pre-reqs. and my IGETC by the end of FALL 07. But, in UCLA's case i'd still have to wait another semester. So i can't apply directly to spring semester? I would love it if i could start spring 08 rather than fall 08.

take the semester off and go study abroad or take classes that interest you. Believe me, you'll appreciate that break before you start UCLA...

Nah, you can't apply for spring (as far as I know)

tonyage,

Sadly...no. Fall is it. You might want to consider taking that period off to work, though! You can save up some discretionary dough for the school year. That way, while everyone is lamenting over how they can't afford gas, you'll be able to laugh and say that you can ALMOST afford gas!
