i go to a public school in california, but i’ve always thought that my school was pretty competitive… i’m not ranked number one but i’ve tried very hard so i stand at about top %10 at least… but then again, I’m not exactly sure how I am compared to other kids because I don’t know how my high school is compared to other high schools… i’m just wondering, how hard do you consider your school to be?

i go to a publis HS, about 500 students, in southeast KY. it's not a badddd school, but i dont think it is great. i only have one or two major people to compete with, but we do have smart ppl at my school. they just arent so concerned about college and their parents do not force them into being people that they're not and do not force them into doing things they dont want to do. i am rank one at my school, and i'm sure i would not be rank one at a competitive HS, but i am happy with my school (even though it does honestly smell and i have to swim through the smoke in the bathrooms) and i have taken most, if not all, of the opportunities offered to me.

oOo- where in California do you live?

my school is supposedly no.2 in CA (because of our standardized test scores), but it really doesn't seem like it. it's public, with about 1000 students in 6 grades (7-12). since so many people have dropped out, my class is down to about 150 people. i'm probably in the top ten, but it's really not that hard and the people aren't that smart. there are only about fifteen people in my class who i would consider "smart," really.

dood....you guys. I go to Loyola high school. NEar IMPOSSIBLE to be in top 10 percent because of al the geniuses in the school. I mean, the AP class, i was lucky even to get a B-

discordial- no. 2 public, private, or overall?

Mine is considered one of the better publics in the area...but that's kind of like picking which piece of month old fruit has the least mold on it. It's just a poor area, so schools aren't that well funded.

overall, i think. it's no.2 by the API system, which i think only CA uses.

i live in southern cali, i don't remember what number our school was but it was like 9 or 10 in the nation for the api index, even then i don't think our high school is all that great.. i mean of course there are people who are really smart.... i don't know what to think.. on one hand i think my school is a great school, on the other i think its about normal.. but what do you consider normal? it's really difficult to judge isn't it?

there's also harvard-westlake ;)

I go to a school in public school in missouri which is ranked among the top in state. Non-honor classes are typically quite easy, where honor courses give you a challenge, but nothing to harsh. But where are school does well is our AP classes. Average grades typically hit the C range, which is find I suppose, and also in the AP area we have some really good, and highly qualified teachers. Our valedictorian has a 4.8. I have a friend with a 4.5 GPA (5.0 is the max) and is ranked 27th. My school is very competitive, but at the same time, alot of the students at my school go to schools such as WUSTL (high school is based right outside of st.louis) and U. Chicago. We also have very high college graduation rates. :)

It really depends on the program you take...
If I was in the regular program, I would do almost nothing and probably be one of the top two people in my grade (sharing the position with my stand partner in band, who had the top average in my grade last year at 96). The average student in the regular program still has about a 75%-80% average.
The thing is, I'm in IB. While the averages are higher in general than regular classes, most kids have 85% ish. You have to work a lot harder to get the reallllly good marks, but I don't mind it at all, because I know that I would fall asleep in the regular program and not be very prepared for uni. Knowing that I'm being challenged is very much worth the rigour of the IB. And the classes are hard... not one person made 84% unstandardized in my math class (I think that our average in probability was actually 43%...). Thank god for standardization anyways...
