How important are campus visits?

I've been to the campus before and I honestly do not want to attend the visits for incoming freshmen like spring welcome day etc. My parents and I have tight work schedules and it would be a big deal money wise to take a day off of work. How important are these visits? Is there anything during these visits that is important enough for me to go? Or will going to orientation be enough?

Orientation is more than enough, but you’re basically committed by that point. As far as just finding your way around, there’s no need to go on the tour groups.

Visits were crucial for me personally. If I did not go on any campus visits, I would not be at U-M right now. Visiting the campus is such a great way to get a feel for everything. My top school before visiting U-M was indeed not U-M. But I visited both schools, hated their campus, loved U-M’s, so I changed my mind. As steellord said, orientation is more than enough, but by that time you’re already enrolled, so it doesn’t really matter whether or not you like the campus at that point, hah.

If your schedule it tight, you don’t need to attend Admitted Students day. That’s best for students who haven’t visited, like my son, or students on the fence. Orientation has all the important information you need. And sign up for one of the earlier dates (June) for orientation, as it’s a great way to make some friends and get connected prior to arriving on campus in August.

Campus Day is primarily an opportunity for the school to sell itself to newly admitted students. If you have already made a decision, then you will have plenty of opportunity at orientation to be given the information you need. I agree with Sportsmom that the earlier your orientation date the better but mostly because it gives you an advantage in registering for classes before they fill up.

You’ll get a better impression when it’s not -2 windchill and buses every half hour anyway. Just brutal this week.

Thanks for all the great replies! Can’t wait for orientation. Thanks for the advice on getting an early orientation date.
