How important are Foreign Language credits in HS?

I know that UNC requires at least two (minimum) Foreign Language credits, to get into the school. As a HS freshman this year, I chose not to take a FL, so I had the opportunity to take other courses, that interested me more. I am starting to look at my schedule for my sophomore year and I am in the same predicament---no room for FL, unless I drop one of my favorite course sequences. I will be able to take FL in my junior and senior years without a problem, but I am concerned that the minimum two credits won't be competitive enough. Am I worried about nothing or should I take the languages more serious?

UNC is my dream school for journalism. I attend a competitive HS where I am part of the newspaper and video production sequences--one would have to go for FL.

Any advice? Thanks.

Piefarm,

Go with what interests you and do not worry about the FL. My son was accepted last year with only two Latin credits. UNC want to see what you are passionate about, leadership potential, SAT scores and difficulty of HS course work. If your are taking a full academic load with AP courses and you are on track with their requirements, I do not think you should worry about the lack FL. Best wishes!

It really doesn’t make a difference. They recommend three, but if your schedule is rigorous enough, I can’t imagine they would even think about your FL.

I took 2 and half years in high school. If you’re able to place out of the foreign language, it’s all good. If not, you’ll be filling the requirement!
