how important are grade trends at uc?

hello everyone, im applying this year for fall 12 and wanted to know if uc's factor in grade trends, this is what i got so far
fall 10-3.0
spring 11-2.52
summer 11-4.0, two A's did get one W
fall 11-4.0, this is what im expecting and all four of my classes are easy.
cumulative gpa:3.23, including this fall semester
major:history
igetc:completed by next spring
tag:none
pre req:none required but taking some recommended classes
applying to:uci, ucd, ucr, ucla, ucsb, ucsd, usc

do they look at recent grade trends and what are my chances for these schools without tag,
any thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated.

UCLA and Cal do. The others don’t, as far as I know.

You’ve got an uphill battle. Write a killer personal statement, and be sure to explain why you received bad grades early on.

yes, grade trends are super important, except fall grades. If you can pull that 4.0 this fall, you can expect to get in to most UCs you apply to, except LA (50-50). As for USC, I have no idea O_o

How many UC transferable units do you have so far (by end of summer '11) and what is your current GPA? Also, how many units are you taking this Fall? 15 or 12 or what?

@Sparkyboy… a ~3.2 will not for sure get people into most UCs. Please do not arbitrarily give out advice that you don’t have any knowledge of.

i have 36 units and gpa is 2.94 as of right now.

Keep in mind that if you were to take 12 units (four 3-unit classes) and you receive a B in just one class among all other A’s… your GPA will only be bumped up to a 3.14.

Most of the people who have very strong grade trends have proven this through many semesters of coursework retribution. You essentially have a single Summer semester where you have improved but you still got a W. Regardless of your personal issues, you haven’t yet shown that you can excel. With all due respect, though you claim that you will this Fall semester, there’s no point in really chancing you until you actually show something more consistent. At this point, without TAG, admission at I/D/SD/SB is totally up in the air and LA is not likely. For what it’s worth, your grades resemble that of a traditional UCR and maybe UCSC acceptance. Of course, there’s always a chance at any school, but that is about the average acceptance outcomes for someone in your position.

If you were to wait an additional year, you could bump your GPA up to a 3.47 by taking 12 units each in Fall '11, Spring '12, and Fall '13 and receiving As. This would significantly increase your chances at many of the UCs.

im actually taking 14 units right now, and the reason i got two A’s this past summer was using ratemyprofessor for the first time and looking for the easiest classes, this fall semester i did the same and got all the professors with at least a 4.0 easy rating, i really think i can get a 3.23 by the end of this semester and two are easy online music classes, with that in mind, if i do get a 3.23 gpa with being a history major, are my chances good or still low?

Considering that general education (and history) classes are cake, I personally think a 3.23 is still pretty low overall especially without TAG. My assessment above still stands.

alright, thanks for your input

i think with a 3.2 gpa, your in for ucr, 50/50 chance for uci, ucsb, ucd, and very little chance for la or sc, good luck!

thanks for your info, and is history impacted for uci, do you think i have a decent chance with a 3.2 gpa?

Why would you include sc with la? They’re not exactly on the same level.

@2 posts above

the op asked for usc and ucla, and from my knowledge there both harder to get into than the other uc’s mentioned

you can get into USC with a 3.2. only exception is marshall which you need 3.7+

Either way, I assumed you were talking about santa cruz.

The USC admissions counselor told me last year that transfers need around 3.8 to be competitive and that they do take grade trends into consideration. That might have been the average GPA of the transfers they admitted though, which would go along with the above poster’s statement. They also admit you to the school as undeclared if you aren’t competitive for your major but they still want you. It’s worth a shot.

There’s no way you’ll get into a UC with that GPA

Why not try CSU? Undergrad isn’t THAT important where you go to… just grad

Considering that 3 of the UC’s have a 3.0 TAG limit, there’s definitely a chance he can get into a UC.
