I find myself at a crossroads:
I have completed most pre-reqs for UCLA Psych major [missing Bio lab and Chem]
I have also completed some but not most UCI Psych reqs [missing 2 psych, 2 social sci, 1 computer sci]; same story for UCSD for CogSci but different classes.
Last IGETC [English] will be done in Spring.

My GPA will range from 3.41 - 3.61 depending on this semester [Its looking more like 3.5+ to be realistic, this semester is going really well]
I am worried that my GPA is not competitive enough for UCLA and that I should maybe focus on UCI or UCSD [way less reqs done], but this would require me to abandon the UCLA pre-reqs in favor of the UCI/SD ones.
I am not sure whether I should take the remaining 2 pre-reqs[+english] in Spring to better my chances at UCLA or try to knock out 3-4 of the UCI/SD reqs to increase my chances there just in case I can't make it into LA anyway.

Or should I take the 8 units for UCLA and try to fit the other 11 units for I/SD reqs? [would make it about 6 classes if scheduling allows; not really how I want to spend my spring, I work part-time]

My understanding is that I have some time in Summer to complete the pre-reqs for my major, but I am mostly concerned with the decision based on what I report for Spring 2012.

Are you applying for transfer this fall? If so than you MUST have ALL of the psych pre-reqs completed by the end of Spring 2012 for UCLA or else they will not admit you. Even of you have 4.0 they will not admit you if are missing any pre-reqs in any of the 10 impacted majors.

Psychology is not impacted at UCSD, therefore pre-req completion is not mandatory. Still recommended. I don’t know about UCi.

UCLA psych is crazy impacted. You’ll have a slim chance against the other applicants with their pre reqs done and a GPA that matches with yours or higher.

I’d go ahead and apply to UCLA and sign up for the remaining prerequisites in the spring. Also, sign up for some of the prerequisites for the other UCs, so that you have a full load. UCLA is a stretch, so don’t get too emotionally invested in it. If it doesn’t work, stay at your CC, and complete the remaining prereqs for UCI and UCSD. Also, consider UC Davis and UCSB. At that point, it’s purely a numbers game, and you’ll have to get accepted into at least one school to move forward.

Okay, so here’s how it goes. Let’s say you apply to UCLA for this go-around, and you don’t get in. Then, you keep taking the prereqs for the other UCs at your community college, and apply to all the UCs next year. You’re “safe,” as long as the evaluator sees in your application that by the time you do transfer, you will have completed all of the prerequisites.

I would suggest you try to e-mail your counselor(s) @ your cc to try to see if you can petition some of the classes to count.

I was trying to decide between UCD and UCSD and it turned out that some of the bio classes that counted for UCD - also counted for UCSD with my petition request(s).

Also, I am a CogSci major @ UCSD - and your life will be SO much easier if you have all of your pre-reqs done, if you do decide to come here.

It doesn’t matter what you report you’re taking for spring, they want to see your pre-reqs completed by the end of Fall since that’s the only way they can guarantee you’ve completed them. Reporting that you’re going to finish your pre-reqs in the spring, or worse the summer before you transfer, isn’t going to affect their decision (unless it’s an absolute transfer requirement English, Math, or Major requirement that you haven’t completed) because they won’t see those grades. The benefit in finishing your pre-reqs in spring/summer right before you transfer is that you’ll have gotten those classes out of the way before you transfer so you can start immediately on your upper division classes, otherwise it has no added benefit on your admission status. However, that being said they want you to have all your pre-reqs completed by the end of Fall so there’s no guessing whether or not you’ll have them done before you enroll. If all other things are equal (GPA, personal statements, TAG/TAP, etc) they’re going to admit those students that have finished their pre-reqs over those that haven’t. It’s also not unusual to see them admit students with “slightly” lower GPAs that have completed their pre-reqs over others with slightly higher (0.05-0.10 higher) GPAs.

@dilapidatedmind: What? There’s no way that’s true…My understanding is they don’t care about summer, so that won’t transfer, but they DO take spring into consideration. I mean, especially at a semester cc, without spring…that leaves three semesters to finish ALL of your prereqs, if you transfer on time. Not everyone even knows what they’re studying in the first semester. I seriously doubt they don’t care about spring.

I don’t know, I just seriously don’t think that could possibly be true. They ask for those grade updates, and they CAN revoke your admission if you really mess up in spring. I’ve always been told it’s by the end of spring, not by the end of fall.

It’s not that they don’t consider spring. You are completely allowed to finish prereqs in spring/winter. I think his point was that having your prereqs done by fall probably helps your chances only in the sense that they can 100% confirm you have completed the prereqs already. Also, if they can calculate your entire prereq/major GPA before admission, it can only help (provided you did well in prereq classes)

Many if you had very good responses and some were were incorrect. First off finish your pre reqs by spring. Fall is not the last opportunity but spring is. Also if you go on assist.org type in your school you attend and the schools of interest it will let you know what classes are needed and whether all pre reqs are a requirement. Ucla wants every last one done or your application is tossed. Irvine does not require all pre reqs completed so just aim for as many as possible its no worries if you don’t complete them all. I’m a psychology major applying to both schools. Good luck!

I got accepted to UCSD for the Biochemistry and Cell Biology major.
I had a 3.65 GPA but I’ve only complete 5 of 12 major pre-requisites. I’m really confused lol
