How important are SAT II scores to Dartmouth?

Hi, I am a Singaporean who is currently studying in England. I was wondering whether Dartmouth considers SAT II scores to be important in the selection process? I have currently got 710 (literature), 730 (chemistry) and 800 (math II). I'm contemplating if I should retake literature and chemistry in november

Also, when do Dartmouth freshmen have to arrive at Dartmouth in Fall 2008 ? When does the school term /orientation start?

This year orientation began on Tuesday, 9/18 and classes started on Wed., 9/26. Next year classes start on Wednesday, 9/24, so the guess is that orientation starts on Tuesday, 9/16.

SATs - see the common data sets for the previous years to get a sense how much importance Dartmouth assigns to various measures (page 6) and the SAT score range for the previous year. It is impossible to really say how much weight Dartmouth gives to SAT scores, but popular consensus seems to be that they are very important factor. That being said, you know that the look at the whole package - essays, recommendations, gps, strength of schedule all also factor heavily.

This Page Has Moved;

Dartmouth considers your ED application without SAT II scores. As far as I know they use the SAT II scores for placement.

Do they consider RDs without SAT II scores?

Nope they dont.

Considering that there is no longer a score choice option, when you send your SAT scores in, the colleges see your SATII scores also (whether you want them to or not).

Wait, so they do not take SAT II scores in account at all except upon entry for placement in courses and stuff?

Thanks again! In a real dilemma if I should retake my SAT IIs in Nov!

That is not necessarily true. Keep in mind that many of the students accepted ED do submit SAT II scores (as they have probably taken the test in time to be submitted for the ED deadline).

Those who probably have not submitted SAT II test scores are probably very few and far between and I would not be suprised if they are hooked applicants.

From Dartmouth website:
“You may apply for Early Decision even if you have not yet taken two SAT II: Subject Tests. You must, however, take two SAT II’s no later than January of your senior year. These test results will be used in further evaluating the applications of deferred Early Decision applicants and for academic placement of accepted candidates.”

The emphasis is on the “may”.

As for placement, as far as I know SAT II subject Tests are used for placement/waiver of Language requirement like Spanish or French. As for subjects like Math , Chemistry and History placements are made using AP scores or IB.

So the students applying with only SAT scores are at a disadvantage?

^^
“So the students applying with only SAT scores are at a disadvantage?”

To tell you the truth, until you pointed out that Dartmouth accepts ED applications without Subject Tests being taken yet, I have not come across anyone who applied ED and then sit for the Subject Tests later in January.

I cannot say if it is a disadvantage or not applying ED without your Subject Tests(you can call the Admissions Office) but consider this… you have to sit for your 2 Subject Tests no later than January of your Senior year(as stated on the Dartmouth website) and all RD applicants have to submit 2 Subject Tests scores. Now you tell me do you think it a disadvantage if you apply ED without any Subject Tests.

A subject test is another way for you to tell the college something about you.
If you are interested in say… Physics, SAT I score cannot tell the whole story but the Subject Test plus any Physics AP exam taken will show your interest or proficiency in that subject.

do you not need the SAT IIs if you take the ACT with writing?, or is it still preferred?

@foggy : oh crap the moment I think I have considered every factor something else pops up. Come december it’ll be all clear. What if I tell them I’ll major i creative gum chewing? probably SAT IIs wouldnt matter. :)

don’t forget that there is a new sheriff in town, i.e., Dean of Admissions and new regional reps, at least one of which hails from a test-optional college. The weighting of test scores (or lack thereof) in admissions under the new regime remains to be seen.

Probably one of the few and far between, but it does happen. D was accepted ED last year with only ACT w/writing and no SAT IIs. She sat for SAT IIs in December and had Dartmouth acceptance before Dartmouth had scores. Whether not submitting scores is an advantage or disadvantage – or in our case probably neutral – I can’t say. And as hard as she tried to stretch the definition, D had no hook.

As background, we are in a state where ACT rules and even at our more selective schools (i.e., Northwestern, WashU) SAT IIs are optional with the ACT w/writing. We simply had not heard of SAT IIs before D considered Dartmouth. Had we, I think she would have taken the SAT IIs earlier and submitted them with her application. Not having scores was certainly not a strategic move on our part.

Good luck to all applicants!
