I am a rising junior at a top 50 undergraduate university on the East Coast, currently taking a year of time off from school. I’m strongly considering transferring, and most of the schools I’m considering are top 30, including a couple of Ivy League schools. I didn’t take the SAT subject tests in high school, as I am from the midwest and focus was prioritized on the ACT.
From information I’ve read on several of the school’s transfer pages, the consensus seems to be that subject tests are “recommended, but not required.” I just want to hear a couple of outside opinions on whether sitting these exams is really worth my time (and $$$) at this point in my life. I understand that a strong score could never hurt my application, but right now I’d be looking at a fee of over $100, not including prep materials. And as a rising college junior, it seems a bit silly to go back and re-master subject areas (US History, Literature, and Math 1) that are taught to high school juniors. However, I don’t want to skip the exams and completely ruin my chances of getting accepted to some of the schools I’m applying to.
Just looking for some outside input before I drop that much money on a couple test scores.
(My stats, as seems to be custom here:
-Top 50 undergrad university
-Honors College
-3.66 college GPA, STEM major
-4.0+ high school GPA, 5th/400 students
-35 ACT, 33 combined English/writing
-strong high school ECs (speech, drama, NHS, language club, GSA), average college ECs/resume (theatre, lab assistant, study abroad)
-one year Leave of Absence)
