How important is a 4th year of foreign language?

It’s my senior year, and my schedule is jam packed. 4 APs, lead yearbook editor, and an independent research project. Most seniors in my school have a waiver (we have an 8 period block schedule), but I do not. The only disposable class for me is french 4, and to be honest, I find it excruciatingly boring. Thing is, I’m willing to tough it out if it really will help my admissions. My top schools I’m looking at are UC Berkely, Cornell, UCLA, and Michigan. My current plan is to major in biomed, but that is subject to change amongst other STEM careers.

Thanks!

For your current targeted schools, none requires 4 years of a foreign language, so you are fine for admission purposes. Just be aware that many colleges have foreign language requirements to graduate, so you may find yourself back in a French (or another language) class next year.

Alright, I’m okay with that. Will not taking it hurt my chances of getting into an undergrad engineering/medical program though?

Well, there is no undergraduate medical program. But for engineering at these colleges, no, it will not hurt your chances. Should you expand your list to include colleges that recommend 4 years, then it would hurt your chances.

In addition, do your parents have 60k a year? Because 3/4 those are public universities and you must be OOS to at least one, and you wouldn’t get any financial aid (loans = 5.5K for freshman year - won’t even pay for room&board).
To answer your original question, you’ll be okay considering your schedule and your intention to major in engineering; however for premed you’re very likely to be required one or two extra semesters of foreign language as a college graduation requirement.
