How important is National Merit?

Am I screwed for the really competitive BS/MD programs if I'm not a National Merit Semi-finalist? (only commended). Even though many programs don't mention it explicitly, do they use semi-finalist status to weed out applicants that have otherwise, solid academic credentials? If you've gotten into any BS/MD w/o being a SF, I'd be interested in knowing.

No, national merit means nothing really. It can get you scholarships, but it really doesn’t influence your ability to get into a program or not.

Im only commended as well, and no it seriously makes no difference AT all. Unless of course your SAT scores is below like a 2200, then I guess it makes an impact. But no, dont worry coconut monkey, i dont think ba md program admissions are as screwed up as we think-they dont find random reasons to reject you like national merit.

I sure hope these programs can look beyond this. Do you guys know if Rice/Baylor superscores? My highest combined is 2300, but my highest single sitting is only 2200…
