How important is the math SAT score?

I bombed the math section of the SAT (540). I did some minimal studying and took the test to see where I stood. My other scores are decent, and I’m interested in Amherst’s writing programs. I’ve heard it’s exceptional, so I want to know: could I still get in by focusing on my writing score of 790 and saying how much I want to utilize the programs at Amherst? Will my math score really bring me down? I do much better on tests when I study intensively, and I plan to take the SAT again. I’m really interested in Amherst, and I think if the math score could be eliminated I would have a good shot!

Look at it from Amherst's point of view: they have a lot of applicants whose writing/verbal scores are in the same league as yours and the Math scores are a lot better...who would you give the edge to if you were doing admissions?

the math score won't be eliminated and you would be much "safer" by taking the SAT again.
