How important will mid-year report be?

Right now my GPA is very good in my opinion (3.9 UW), but because of an EC that requires way too much time, I might get two Bs this semester, thus bringing my GPA down...how important will the mid year report be? My counselor said she would write off the grades because of this EC (it's very prestigious at my school), but I'm still worrying...any thoughts?

Well, if you applied early decision then Columbia wont even see the mid-year report until they made their decision. If you were accepted you basically just have to keep your gpa at 3.5 and they wont get on your case. Otherwise Columbia will see your mid-year report. Ive been told that the mid-year report isnt as important as soph/junior year b/c its only 1 semester, but it still counts for something. Im sure that they wont look down on two Bs, esp since one is from an EC.

oh no, im not getting a B in the EC class, but im getting Bs from two academic classes...its just that the EC takes up too much time (i'm editor-in-chief of an award winning newspaper) and i've had to sacrifice much of my time for this

Still, getting two B's wont kill you, especially if you are taking a demanding course load and if your counselor comments on how involving your EC is. Just try to do well in everything else, especially the subjects that your prospective college major will involve.

alright, thank you

I don't know what the point of having your counselor call attention to your B's is going to do other than make matters worse. It's up to Columbia to judge what your grades mean, not you and your counselor. There are tons of applicants who manage to pull great grades while pursuing an EC (or multiple ECs) that require a ton of time, and you're hardly the only newspaper EIC applying to Columbia. Columbia is looking for people who can have balance in their life and juggle multiple things, so having your counselor tell them that you're unable to do handle more than one thing properly is a sure negative.

don't want to sound too negative, but i agree with 2002.
