Reflection:

Strengths: Over all well rounded student, with leadership, strong academics, and athletics. Minority? Kind of, as in woman in engineering
Weaknesses: I have one D on my transcript
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted – Loyola, UW Madison, Minnesota… though still waiting for northwester, Stanford, and UC berkeley

also, here is a decisions thread… and some of them are for engineering, you just have to sort through it

I can’t even begin to compare myself to you, but thanks for your input.

Can I PLEASE Get Some More Input? This Will Really Help Me Out.

My input? Just put some hard work into your application, and hope for the best. A 30 or 2000 on the ACT or SAT respectively is ideal, but not always necessary. Basically I’d just say that worrying about stats too much will only stress you out. Just work hard to build a strong portfolio, write good essays, then hope for the best.

It also would be smart for you to apply to a variety of universities other than UIUC. I know I’ve been rejected or deferred from schools I consider myself overqualified for, so anything can happen.

Not sure what u r looking for if u want advice on u then u can post your stats and we can analyze your chances

I just want to know what the average SAT and GPA of an engineering student are. I have a 3.2 UW (3.6 Junior Year), in rigorous classes. I am predicting between 1900 and 2100 on my SAT’s. I have decent ECs including some model UN (won a lot of awards), peer leaders, music (guitar and bass), honor roll during junior year and Habitat for humanity (3 years). What are my chances.

On the website found here, it says the average SAT score is 1970-2190, so if you do as you expect, you’re in the clear there. The UW GPA could be little higher, but the fact that you did better junior year is a plus if you keep that up through senior year; admissions officials like seeing improvement.

If you can take on a leadership role in one of those EC’s, it would definitely bolster your application. What program are you interested in applying to?

I am interested in Chem Eng. Is that harder to get into than most eng majors or about the same? I have peer leaders, though that is nothing exceptional. What would you recommend for a leadership role?

ChemE is about normal from what I can tell, so there shouldn’t be any big risks there. As for leadership, it’s hard for me to say as I go to a different high school than you.

Are there any leadership roles such as president or captain in your Model U.N.? (I’m not very familiar with those…) If your school has a student council or student government, I had some success with giving a heartfelt speech, then chugging a bottle of hot sauce onstage. I mean, you know, whatever can get you into that position. Otherwise… Maybe something in a smaller club you’re part of, or something that shows leadership in Habitat for Humanity? There’s a lot of wiggle room there as far as I can tell, it just helps to have at least something.

There is not really any president places this year, but next year there is a small possibility. Is there anything leadership like outside of school that I could sign up for that you know of? Also, at Habitat for Humanity, I worked so hard that the guy made me captain of the flooring team for the week and offered to write me a letter of rec. Should I include that? By the way, I am a junior, so I have a little bit of time.

Thanks so much for your help by the way. Maybe if you want an inexpensive floor put in your house one day… jk…

Check out the freshman profile for the uiuc college of engineering to see how you stack up.

Again, it’s hard for me to say since each town out there is vastly different in terms of the organizations and charities that are found in it. I’m not quite sure what you mean by captain for the week, but if there’s any way you could talk to that same guy about taking on a position with a longer term next year, that would be a very good position to have.

And don’t worry about it, the best advice I have to give is to work hard and worry less. It’s good to have your plan for next year charted out to make your application strong, but getting too stressed out about whether you’ll make it or not won’t help at all.

The mission trips are only one week long each. We were working on two houses and on one of them he had me run the whole flooring operation. There is no more permanent positions because like I said, it is only 1 week.

Your absolutely right, and I keep telling myself that, but it is so frustrating when you don’t take your first 2 years of HS seriously and it brings your UW to ~3.2. Now all that I am doing is studying for one of the five tests I have this week, studying for chem (720 Barrons Diagnostic Test) and Math II (600 Barrons Diagnostic Test) SAT II’s. I would love to get 720-750+ in both of them. That certainly isn’t helping my stress.

Thanks for your input though.

Hi Caruso,
Just wanted to weigh in and tell you to chill out. Don’t stress out and take yourself too seriously. You should try to have a little fun in high school too.

That being said your stats are fine (assuming you do as well as you expect on your SAT). I like your explanation about your low gpa your first two years is killing your overall gpa. As you said it sucks that you have to dig yourself out of such a hole but your improvement in your junior year as well as your difficult course load is commendable. I think that could be the basis of one of your essays.

As Regenesus said, try to get some leadership opportunities. I know it is hard to fit everything in but can you teach or lead classes in guitar? Can you participate in a cancer/charity walk and get some of your friends to help raise money (then you can put down that you organized a team for X charity)? What about through your church? Build up your peer leadership opportunities - say that you were a mentor. Habitat for Humanity is great and I’d try to build off of that. You could say you were selected to serve as floor team captain (that sounds more impressive instead of saying captain of the flooring team for the week). You see, it’s all in the marketing and how you SELL yourself. Anything you volunteer or participate in can be reworked to sound impressive without lying. Think along the lines of “custodial engineer” for maintanence man or “domestic engineer” instead of housewife. LOL. But seriously don’t sell yourself short. You’ve got a lot going for you so just sell that!

And try to enjoy your high school years.

Thank you so much. I am going to try to pick up some good charity events in the upcoming future. I am trying not to stress, but getting into a college such as UIUC is really important to me. I really need to take a break from this site, lol, thanks for your input.
