How is Philadelphia?

in terms of awesomeness, compared to NYC, Boston, DC, and Chicago.

They don’t call it Killadelphia for nothing…

Nah, I hear it’s a decent city. Just stay out of the ghetto (don’t know where that is in Philly).

I’m from DC, I love it here and I can’t see myself living in many other places besides the DC area. Which much like Philly has its bad areas, but for the most part (especially if you go to school here) you stay out of them.

It’s not California; so, by default, it sucks. xD

I’m from Philly, so I don’t really appreciate your comment tekyero lol.

And DCHurricane, the “ghettos” of Philadelphia are in West, deep South, Southwest, and North Philadelphia. Northwest, Northeast and Center City are the “non-ghetto” areas.

I’ve only been to NYC and DC before so I can’t compare it to Chicago or Boston. I like Philly. There’s always tons of stuff to do and places to go, and there’s a diversity of people in the city. No where in Philly is it ever crowded like you’re suffocating (i.e. Manhattan area). If you’re smart & careful, and don’t do stuff that is just asking for trouble, you probably won’t get shot or mugged. However in terms of the public school system, it absolutely sucks. Only a small handful of public high schools in Philadelphia are good while a whole lot of them are sub-par - where a lot of students skip school, beat up people, disrespect teachers, don’t do school work, and are ignorantly racist.

And about the colleges that are in Philly, since you posted this topic in college life, there’s Penn, Temple, Drexel, Philadelphia University, USP, CCP and a few other smaller colleges.

Temple is in north Philly area technically, so definitely be careful there when it’s night time. They don’t have lights on the Temple campus that make it look like day time for nothing. I’ve known a number of people who get mugged near the Temple campus at night, especially when they step out of campus boundaries. Penn, Drexel, and USP are all in west Philly, but it is within the University City circle so it’s generally pretty safe unless you walk around late at night doing stuff that asks for trouble. :stuck_out_tongue: I find people around University City to usually be pretty nice and friendly as well. Then Phila. University is a not so great part of northeast Philly, but it’s not bad there.

Avenue of the Arts is also pretty cool if you like theatre, musicals and concerts and all that stuff… It’s on South Broad street behind City Hall and there are a lot of theatres and concert halls all within a couple blocks. Plus if you want to run up the museum stairs that Rocky ran up, you could do that lol.

I say, Philadelphia’s pretty awesome. Could be way better, but you can say that for any city. Where else can you watch the Mummer’s Parade or find real cheesesteaks beside Philly? No where.

yeah it’s not like Cali has tons of urban sprawl or crime or insanely high real estate prices, nah it’s an oasis of awesome.

Compared to NYC = Good
Compared to Boston = Not Good
Compared to DC = Way worse
Compared to Chicago = Way worse

Hahaha

my older brother just came back from Philly. He tells me that over there they have not grasped onto the concept of supermarkets, so its hard to buy everything you need in one place. Can anyone comment on this?

On the plus side, he told me cab rides in Philly are real cheap compared to NY.

Then again, no city comes close to the awesomeness of NYC. Boston is cool, never went to Chicago, D.C is good too.

I went there a couple years ago, and it was kind of dirty to me. I know all cities are dirty to some extent, but it just really stuck out there. I remember going to this mall that was near my hotel and a hallway right by the food court smelled like pee.

Anonymous91: Have not grasped the concept of supermarkets? Your brother probably did not look very hard for them. There are tons of supermarkets all over the city except in Center City. But Center City is not exactly the type of place for grocery shopping, so that’s why there aren’t any. If your brother needed a store that sort of sells everything in Center City, he should have went to the KMart.

BryDeeC: I concur, Philly is quite dirty. And I know what mall you’re talking about: The Gallery. It’s next to the McDonalds and it definitely does smell like pee… I never go to that bathroom lol.

You said it!

eh there are kind of supermarkets on south street, which is in center city

anyway, i’m from around philly and i like it. like other people said, you just have to be careful. it’s a cool city though

I’ve gotten to explore NYC way more than Philly, but they’re both awesome. Philly is dirty and everything closes at night whereas Manhattan is always ‘awake’. but it is definitely cheaper and less crowded than New York.

philly is my dream city. someday i will live there!

I go up to Center City every now and then, I live in the suburbs. People there are pretty chill, they’re mostly all druggies / taggers I hang out with up there though (pretty sure most people on CC wouldn’t enjoy hanging out with these people) but it’s not really as dangerous as it’s made out to be. From my experiences at least. Being on Temple’s and Drexel’s/Penn’s campuses I felt pretty safe.

Pretty funny coming from someone in DC…

don’t ask MOMOFWILDCHILD right now…

phillys cool but i wouldnt dare compare any place to nyc

“Pretty funny coming from someone in DC…”

Takes one to know one :P

Wow, that was about as middle school as it gets…

in Philly you will be surrounded by Flyers and Eagles fans. ugh.
