how is the wifi at ucsd? i plan to get an iphone 4 and being connected to a reliable wifi network would be awesome. can anyone tel me know the wifi at ucsd is?

It’s good in lecture halls and in very busy areas such as Price Center… but if you’re in random parking lots or the outskirts of campus then it’s nonexistent.

I get decent wifi walking around the campus. The second I go off though, none

How’s the wifi in the dorms? Is there ever lag? What’s the average speed?

Wifi in the dorms is mediocre… even in ERC, everyone told me it was super fast but I beg to differ. Make sure to bring an ethernet cable to plug in. Or buy one at the bookstore after you move in.

In the dorms…at least for my laptop, it’s on and off…

I’ve noticed (for whatever apparent reason), though, that it’s best in the common areas during the day, and almost nonexistent in the actual dorm rooms at night without a cable.

You’d think paying 22k+ a year would offer you consistent wifi everywhere on campus…

Wi-fi was fine in Warren res halls…

do u think wifi on an iphone would be good on campus? the wifi at ucsd really decides if i get an iphone or not. so please helpe me out

why would you use wifi on an iphone? they require you to get a data/internet plan…

3G is slower than most broadband connections.

I always get a good wifi connection anywhere ON campus. As long as your not expecting to get wifi in parking structures or in remote locations of campus where there are no lecture halls nearby, you should be fine.

Using wi-if on an iphone constantly would drain the battery within a few hours…

i know in muir res halls (the suite lounge) has good wifi, in the muir apartments, the wifi is really great, and mostly everywhere on campus the wifi is really fast

Wifi depends on your area. Sixth college imo has the best reception (i am biased). Revelle from what I hear has the worst and so does Muir (Tioga). Others have so-so. Haven’t heard much from ERC.

You’ll get good reception everywhere in ERC’s dorms or apartments but there are so many people using wi-fi that there’s a lot of signal congestion and it makes wi-fi unusable at times. Bring an ethernet cable for sure… That way you can really make use of UCSD’s ridiculous internet connection.

yeah ill def bring an ethernet cable for my computer. but im mainly asking about the wifi for the iphone…hows the wifi at warren??

If you’re asking specifically for the iphone, you’re not going to have any luck. Whoever has an iPhone takes advantage of their 3G coverage. I can say from experience though, that the iPod touch gets good wifi ALL OVER campus

^ can you elaborate why an iphone’s wifi would be any different from an ipod touch? it’s the same internet whether you’re on a phone, laptop, whatever.

^ I don’t think Avib0y means that the wifi on the iPhone is any different from that on a iPod Touch but, simply that people with an iPhone will tend to rely on AT&T’s 3G rather than a foreign wifi network. The iPod Touch/Laptop/other phones has no connection to AT&T or carrier data service thus relies on a wifi connection.

I connect to the school’s Wi-Fi when I’m not strapped for battery life. AT&T 3G on campus is atrocious.
