how long do colleges usually take to process?

1) i have a teacher rec that was sent (via snail mail) in mid-November and i'm not sure if it has been processed by many of my schools. Most of my schools don't have an online account to check but on Penn Portal I'm still missing it.

2) do you think colleges open big envelopes first and smaller ones second? Penn received my transcript, counselor report which were all sent in a big brown envelope, but my SAT scores (also sent mid-Nov) and my teacher rec (small envelope) have not been processed.

Do colleges give you a grace period later on to turn in missing materials? I really hope it doesn't come to that because I'd probably be the last application from my school for each college to read. However, I guess still having my application read is better than nothing. Thank you for your help on this matter, i'm extremely nervous!

I've had weird experiences with this. Some schools received my SAT scores the day after I sent them (I didn't rush them), and some took like 6-7 months to process (but I sent them in March). Also, one school took about 3 weeks to process the transcript. Another school said that it received everything but my teacher rec (all other schools said they got it) and then a week later it finally said that they received it. So I'm guessing that they have the letter and maybe even filed it, but haven't gotten around to updating your file.
I have no clue about the second ? though.

The best thing you can do in pretty much any of these sort of situations is to contact the school personally. Rather than sit around waiting and hoping that something arrives or gets processed in time, you should find out definitively what's going on!

Thank you Giggitus, you've given me some hope.
@ Wlokos: I wish i could contact these schools but they'll most likely respond with "we probably haven't gotten around to your mail yet so give us two weeks".
Can anyone answer my question about the grace period? does that apply to all schools?
anyone else have experiences with this?

anyone else?
