How many classes are you going to take...?

yeah I wasn’t sure how you do the whole DeCal thing haha. I can’t take PE classes cuz of a health condition so I’ll just figure that out at CalSO.

So here’s my issue… maybe someone could give me some advice. I only need 11 classes to graduate from Cal and I was thinking about enrolling in 4 classes that will amount to 13 credits for Fall (two of the classes are repeats of classes I already took that weren’t fully articulated). For some reason, almost every one of my UD classes are only 3 credits. Is this normal? I feel like I have an awful lot of space in my schedule over the next two years.

What’s your major? My classes are 4 units and I have extra room so I’m adding a minor.

12-13 units… and that will be enough for an engineering major.

I’m planning on 12-13 units for Fall quarter to get used to the quarter system. I’ll also be trying to get into research asap. I’m an Ecology and Evolutionary Biology major.

I’m a chemical biology major. I was thinking about picking up a double major in MCB in Immunology since the dept doesn’t offer minors. I will only need 5 additional classes (one intro kind of class and 4 UppDiv - 1 of which I can take over next summer since Chem doesn’t offer any Upper Division summer classes anyway). Then again, I don’t want to over-extend myself… I can’t really think of any other minors that I would actually be interested in. Maybe math?

UGHHHH MATTHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOO. oh sorry reflex reaction. and do you really only need 11 classes?! like you did the American Cultures req and the History and Institutions req? wow. still with 11 classes, you could just take 3/semester with one other class added…your major is already a killer, and you would have a good amount of time for research or whatever the hell ECs you want/job/time to walk your dog/party/take luxurious baths.

just my 2 pesos.

edit: ooommggg 1111 posts MAKE A WISH

I may have missed American Cultures but I have 34593485 GEs so I think something will coincide. Regardless, I can take that over next Summer since my primary major doesn’t offer Summer classes anyway.

In the future, I would like to work in some branch of virology research so I thought it would be beneficial to have some experience and knowledge in MCB, though additionally I’d like to try to get into some actual research there. Without any additional classes, I’m only going to have 6 credits in Spring '12 and 6 in Fall '12 lol. I’m transferring with about 90 units also rather than the typical 70.

I was realllllyyyyyy confused for a sec but then I scrolled up and read that one course is 3 units haha. maybe do the immunology thing then! lol i wish i could help more, but i’m just a social science major :/

12 units ,
I might take a online class or 2 though my CC to knock out some extra units though .

Can we still take CC classes?

Over the summer you are still allowed to take CC classes. I think once you transfer, all of your Upper Division and major requirements have to be fulfilled at the UC but you could probably take gen-ed at a CC. (As long as you’re still enrolling in 13 units at UCB)

If you’re in the sciences, I don’t think double majors are that particularly important or useful, especially if you’re at Cal. Focus on doing well in 1 major and get some research experience by working in a lab. Even if you’re not pursuing a career in academia, I think the experience complements your degree quite nicely for whatever post-graduate plans you have.

Yeah I do see where you’re coming from but I’m not planning on getting a double major just for the sake of it looking impressive or anything. The reason I’m going to Cal is for the education, not for a piece of paper that says I went there and completed a specific set of classes. IMO, I want to take advantage of the education that the school has to offer while I’m there. I already have time to do research. What I’m trying to do is fill up the space in my schedule since I have to be considered full time. It’s not like I’m going above and beyond to add a major and kill myself in the process. I’ll only have 13 credits per SEMESTER not even quarter if I include the double major lol. Plus I technically have over 130 semester units so I am really sick of gen ed classes.

Since I need to come up with 20 credits worth of classes over the next two years, why wouldn’t I take classes in Immunology/Pathogenesis (which I’m interested in anyway and additionally complements Biochem fairly well) as opposed to taking 20 credits worth of random gen ed that I don’t need and that I’m not interested in? Idk, perhaps some people would rather just take easy classes, but I’d rather take classes that are actually going to enhance knowledge in my particular field… so why not pick up a double major since I have the time? I guess I’ve already decided that this might be something I’m interested in lol.

you type such long, (somewhat rambling, no offense!!!) posts I get reminded of Kmazza sometimes. Anyone remember that wierdo? Not an insult, just an observation! Atleast you make sense whenever I muster up the strength to read your posts haha.

Most of it is self-reflection, but a lot of people message me regarding the things I say, so I guess someone reads it lol.

enough classes to meet the FT load at Davis. So probably 3 classes + PE or something along those lines

I’m honestly thinking of taking 17 units my first semester. I’m going to take a 10 unit intensive language class over summer so hopefully that will prepare me for the workload.

My tentative course schedule:
The Cultures of Franco-America (4 units)
Ancient Religion (4 units).
Intermediate Russian (5 units)
Reading and Writing Skills in French (4 units).

This might kill me, though. Hopefully the counselors can give me some input.

^ I am also thinking of taking more than the minimum, to be honest. Even if it kills me, lol. I’m behind on pre-requisites and can’t take summer sessions at Davis to catch up =/ But most likely I’ll do 13 units fall quarter then winter/spring take 16+ and go through summer 2012…

Isn’t it better to take more classes (more units), speaking strictly money-wise? Because you’re paying a set tuition fee, right?
