Have decided to fly and need to book airline tickets. How many days should parent allow (have to buy everything when we get there). Have not received dorm info but it looks like move in is August 27 and 28 so would probably arrive on the 26th....What electronic items do they need (TV/fridge) and where to purchase? Thanks!

We are allowing one full day prior to move in to shop and spend a little time on campus with our son, so we are flying in the night before the day before move in begins (hope that made sense). He is doing orientation at move in, so his move in dates are a couple days earlier than those who are doing orientation over the summer. We are planning on doing all his bedding/lamp/dorm "stuff" purchases here at Bed, Bath and Beyond over the summer. They have a program where you buy the items in your hometown and then pick the items up at the store in your student's college town. That way we don't need to worry about them running out of stuff.

He is renting the fridge/micro combination from the school unless his roommate decides to buy one. It's just easier for us that way, and the rental price is reasonable. He can always cancel the rental if need be. As far as other electronic items. Our son plans on bringing a laptop and possibly a printer, and a shelf speaker for his iPod. That's it (I think). He's not into watching TV or video games, etc.

Where did you get the info about renting the micro/fridge, etc?

Honestly, skip the whole Bed, Bath, and Beyond thing. There is a Meijer store located at I-94 and Ann Arbor-Saline Rd only 2-3 miles from campus, another closer to Ypsilanti, and a third one at Jackson Rd. and Zeeb Rd another five miles down I-94.

Since you are flying in, I assume you don't know what Meijer is. Pretty much what Wal-Mart would be if it was not trashy, in addition to a great grocery store. They will have a pretty good selection and you will likely save a ton of money. I am sure that anyone else who is a student here / is from the Midwest will tell you the same thing. Everyone on campus probably does 90%+ of their basic shopping there. Your kid will figure it out when they move out of the dorm, figured I will just give you the tip now. I wouldn't worry about them running out of stuff - they plan for move-in big time. And since you will be here a little early, even less of an issue.

Momnewto this. My son took care of the fridge rental. He found the info somewhere on the college housing website. If you google "University of Michigan refrigerator rental" I'll bet you'll find the info. Dsmo, thanks for the info about Meijer. I'm sure my son will find it helpful.

Fridge or fridge and microwave?

You don't need to buy a fridge or microwave if you're in Oxford. I think its the only dorm that provides you with those items.

Oxford is the only one that has them in the rooms/suites/whatever, but Martha Cook, Fletcher, and I believe most of the houses in Baits have community kitchens.
