I am only in one extracurricular activity right now (I'm a sophomore), after being forced to drop student council (it was a class, which I can't take because of scheduling issues). I am in Academic Decathlon, which takes up about twenty hours a week of my time, but I'm wondering if this will put me at a disadvantage when it I apply to college. There are very few clubs at my school. Also, would competitions that take place once or twice a year be counted as extracurricular activities even though we don't really prepare for them?

If I were you, I would just stay consistent with Academic Decathlon. If possible, it wouldn’t hurt to try to get a leadership position in it, since it takes up so much of your time anyway.

Quality not quantity counts with EC’s. You could have one EC that just blows everyone else out the water. But I’d suggest doing more than just Academic Decathlon.
