How many financial aid I can get at UCs (UCSB,UCD,UCI and others UCs)if my family is low-income family (around 20000)?
I got 5500 when I still in CC. Just wanna know how mcuh I can get in UCs because some students who attend UCB, they did not pay any tuition cuz financial aid cover all of it for them!!

We need more info:

Are you a Calif resident?

Did you go to a Calif high school?

Do you qualify for Cal Grants?

Did you use the Net Price Calculators on the UC’s websites? If not, do so. Then tell us what result you got.

@mom2collegekids Sorry, my mistake. I am california resident, didnt go to califonia high school but went 2 year in california community college. I dont know what is Cal grant but I got 5500 pell when I was in cc.
I just use the Net price calculators, it indicate the Grant part is around 20000, Self help around 9000, and 0 for family help. Estimate net price is same number with the self help’s.
So could you mind explain what is that mean?

I think you have to be a Calif high school grad to get a Cal Grant, but it sounds like you still qualify for Blue and Gold promise.

It looks like you’re going to get a Pell Grant plus a UC grant and maybe some SEOG grant money…and those 3 grants will total about $20k. SEOG isn’t assured so that $20k is just an estimate.

The “self-help” means student loans and work study. So, you’ll get about $9k of loans and WS.

You should probably try to work this summer and use that money to buy your books and uncovered expenses… and also to buy anything you need for your dorm.

@mom2collegekids thank you for your explaining. Can you explain what is blue and gold promise, UC grant and SEOG? those words are totally strange to me~
Thank you so much

Cal Grants are available only to recent high school graduates, or to students transferring directly from community college to a UC.

Meanwhile, until someone else chimes in with answers to the rest of your questions, why don’t you do a google search for “SEOG” and “blue and gold promise”?

Its called the " UC Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan". Every UC will probably have this info on their website under financial aid.

@dodgersmom sounds like i am qualified for the Cal Grants cuz I am transferring to uc from cc this year.
@3younguns thank you for your information

I don’t think the eligiibility for Cal Grants is being a Calif high school grad OR transfer from a CC.

I think the req’t is:

Calif high school grad

OR

Calif high school grad AND transfer from a CC.

I don’t think you qualify for a Cal Grant if you went elsewhere for high school, moved to Calif, became a resident, went to a CC, and are now transferring to a UC.

[Grants for School, College Grant, School Grants](http://www.calgrants.org/index.cfm?navId=12)

You’re eligibility is first determined by whether you went to a Calif high school.

If you didn’t graduate from a Calif high school then you don’t qualify.

If you did graduate from a Calif high school, THEN, you have to further qualify by:

Within one year after you graduate. So even if you have to go straight to work before going to college, you don’t have to miss out on a Cal Grant.
As a community college transfer student, as long as you are under the age of 28.
As a high school senior.
Within one year of getting your GED.

But you first must graduate from a Calif high school.

These rules are in place so that people don’t move to Calif after high school and then quallify for a Cal Grant. The state can’t afford such transplants.

I believe a student is also eligible for Cal Grants if he or she was a California resident at the time of high school graduation, even if he or she didn’t graduate from a California high school.

So, for example, a California resident who who left the state temporarily to attend and graduate from boarding school in Arizona would still be eligible for a Cal Grant, assuming all other requirements were met.

But m2ck is correct - if you established California residency only after graduating from a high school outside of California, you would not be eligible to receive a Cal Grant.

^^

You’re probably right about the student attending boarding school elsewhere. I think military kids whose “state of record” is Calif also qualify even if they attended school elsewhere.

In the case of the OP, it sounds like he went to high school elsewhere, he and his family moved to Calif, they then established residency, and then he started college. In that case, he doesn’t qualify for Cal Grants.

However, if he does get accepted to a UC, and if he does qualify for Blue and Gold, then he will get UC grants and likely a Pell Grant. And, he’d likely get student loans and work study to go towards the rest of his costs.
