There were only two out of last year's class of around 550, and I don't know who else is NMSF this year beside myself.

I'm kind of surprised that you all have found out about other semifinalists already; when my counselor gave me the news, he told me everything was supposed to be confidential until the 12th. I'll have to wait until tomorrow to let you all know.

about 12/300

What are the various qualifiers for these programs?

21 NMSF class of 270

wow! you guys are at awesome schools with that many SFs. There are 6/400 in my school this year. Last year there was only 1. 08! 08!

At this point it is only known the number of 2008 Nat. merit SEMI-FINALISTS.
the list of Nat. Merit FINALISTS will not be out until Spring 2008.

Son's school had 34 out of 430. Public high school. In 2006 there were 29 finalists.

The partial answer to your question is:
For 2008 Nat. merit Semifinalist in Louisiana the required PSAT is 207 and above.
I do not know the cut off number for Nat. Achievement and Nat Hispanic; and I do not even know if for these URM there is only one cutoff number of if it is different for each state.
If anyone has this info please share it.

DVU1990: I think there are three reasons why my son's school has so many NMSF's. 1) Nearly half of the class is a year ahead (or two) in math compared with most public schools. These kids are already in AP Calc BC by the time they take the PSAT in the fall of 11th grade so they are very comfortable with the algebra and trig concepts tested. 2) The school draws from a populace with highly educated parents (most have masters degrees). 3) Many of the students take the PSAT for free in 10th grade.

There were 5 at my school out of a class of about 345.
One moved in at the beginning of this year from Illinois, though.

Scores:

225
223
220
219
217

Kansas cutoff is 215 or 216, I think.

Here are the past few years at my school:

2004 - 2 NMSFs
2005 - 2 NMSFs
2006 - 6 NMSFs
2007 - 5 NMSFs

1 NMSF out of about 500 seniors.
Score of 222 in Long Island, NY.

151 out of 430ish

Wow chronicidal, your school must really have some brilliant kids.

Our school I was the only NMSF out of 350, but i dont know how many commended. (probably 2-3) The other school in the district fared better I think.
